This week Kengo Kuma added an arched entrance to Angers Cathedral

This week on Dezeen, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma unveiled the new entrance to the Angevin gothic-style Angers Cathedral.
Kuma's design features five arched openings, wrapped in archivolts – a series of ornamental bands. The concrete entrance frames views of the historic sculptures in the doorway.
The 21-metre-long entrance was designed to create "a harmonious dialogue" with the architecture of the medieval building, according to the studio.

Also in Milan, Swedish studio Front showed furniture that looks like 3D-perspective drawings and Nike opened a permanent innovation laboratory.

In design news, athletes Sabastian Sawe and Tigst Assefa wore the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3s to run the London marathon in world record times, with Sawe recording the first-ever official sub-two-hour time.
This gave Adidas the bragging rights in its competition with Nike to create record-setting trainers, as explored in our article on the race to create the ultimate running shoe.

In the US, president Donald Trump announced plans to repaint the base of the "filthy" Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC. He said the basin will be lined in a bright "American flag blue" liner.
"Now we have a nice, clean surface on which we're putting an industrial-grade swimming pool topping," said Trump. "It'll last for 40 or 50 years."

We rounded up six open-source gadgets that tinkerers can DIY, including a gorpcore navigation tool and a blender that works with household jars.
We also explored eight iconic mid-century modern designs that never went out of production.

Popular projects this week included a wine tasting room in California, an apartment arranged around a multifunctional box and a Portuguese granary that was turned into a museum.
