Organisers in Montreal, Canada, have announced the first-ever dedicated design week for the city, including a trade show, conference and activities across a network of galleries and studios.

On the 20th anniversary of it being named a UNESCO City of Design, Montreal will launch its first-ever design week in late April to consolidate various ongoing trade fairs and events under one banner.

It will be centred around the 20-year-old Index-Design Show (formerly Complètement Design) trade fair, which takes place over one day at the Grand Quay at the Port of Montreal.

The fair will be expanded into the city, incorporating a broad array of designers and architecture studios.

Montreal to join "Milan, Paris and New York"

"Montreal now joins cities such as Milan, Paris, and New York in hosting its own Design Week – an annual event that will energize the city with a dynamic program of activities open to both the general public and architecture and design professionals," said Index-Design CEO Arnaud Granata.

"For our partners and us, it is an exceptional opportunity to highlight the talent, creativity, and dynamism of our local architects, designers, boutiques, manufacturers, and distributors."

Montreal Design Week is being organised by Archi-Design QC and presented by surfaces company Tafisa Canada, with sponsors including Kohler, Ligne, and a variety of museums, governmental and civic groups.

The city has backed the week in an attempt to strengthen the cultural impact of the city's design industry.

"The creation of the first Montreal Design Week contributes to the city's national and international cultural reach," said Montreal's lead design commissioner Patrick Marmen.

"We are pleased to support this event by encouraging the participation of a diverse range of designers and by reaffirming our strategic commitment to developing an innovative and creative economy," he continued.

"Montréal Design Week will be a major gathering for the city's design ecosystem."

More than 50 venues

Though the event is still being consolidated, so far its website features the trade show and a conference at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Organizers said that more than 50 venues across the city will host events.

The show will take place in late April and run for 10 days, in the weeks between Milan and New York City's design weeks.

Montreal Design Week comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Canada, given the ongoing tariffs being levied on Canada by the US, including design products.

In Toronto, during the yearly IDS event, designers taking part in festivities told Dezeen that they would be avoiding coming to trade shows in the US for the foreseeable future, and the Montreal Design Week could be another outlet for creatives who usually gather in New York.

The consolidation of clusters of design events into design weeks has continued over the past few years, with Chicago announcing its own design week last year.
