US celebrity Gwyneth Paltrow has collaborated with Texas-based studio Michael Hsu Office of Architecture on the first sit-down restaurant for wellness company Goop, giving visitors "a new way to experience the brand".

Goop Kitchen Del Mar opened on 31 August and is located at the One Paseo shopping complex in San Diego. It is the first location of a broader expansion for Goop subsidiary Goop Kitchen, which plans to open additional locations across the region and New York City.

The interior design is coastal, with a mix of walnut millwork, banquets with striped upholstery, and a slew of textured surfaces, including a tiled floor. A black-and-white colour palette was used throughout. According to the team, Paltrow worked closely with Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and "personally curated every detail" to make the space feel "elevated yet welcoming".

"Gwyneth has a real design vocabulary, so we could go deeper with her than we usually can – down to the nuance of how a piece of stone meets a piece of wood," said studio founder Michael Hsu. "Her attention to detail made the spaces sharper and more considered."

Visitors enter a "dramatically veined marble feature wall", where an ordering system rests on a large wooden desk. Banquet seating is lined up against large steel-framed windows and spreads out into the centre of the space.

Details include brushed-metal pendant lights and two thin rows of black-and-white checked tiles on the floor.

The details were meant to align with San Diego's beach oceanside culture.

"Designed to feel elevated yet welcoming, the interior is anchored by a dramatically veined marble feature wall and layered with warm, natural details," said the team.

"The space works for everything from a weekday lunch or sunset dinner, capturing the sun-soaked essence of San Diego."

On the outside patio, the restaurant is outfitted with mint green metal chairs, marble table-tops and the same striped upholstery. Scalloped pagoda umbrellas lined with a black edge also fill the outdoor space.

Visitors can order dishes such as an assortment of salads and bowls. Goop Kitchen will also explore expanding the menu to "take full advantage of having its first sit-down restaurant", according to the team.

"The 92-seat flagship gives guests a new way to experience the brand, marking its first dedicated dine-in location," said Goop.

Goop Kitchen was launched in 2021 primarily as a takeout and delivery service and an "upscale fast-casual concept".

According to the team, it plans to open locations in La Jolla, downtown San Diego and Manhattan next.

The Goop brand has been controversial since its launch. Paltrow herself has drawn scrutiny on social media recently for reportedly planning a dinner party for AI CEO Sam Altman.

The Michael Hsu office has worked on a number of restaurants, including a Houston seafood restaurant and an eatery in Austin housed in a building from the 1890s.

The studio has also worked with larger chains before, such as designing the Shake Shack headquarters in New York.
