Dyson unveils its first toothbrush that "uses a camera to floss while you brush"
Technology company Dyson has launched the CameraJet electric toothbrush, which includes a mouthwash jet that is directed by a camera to remove plaque between teeth.
Named the Dyson CameraJet, the electric toothbrush is Dyson's first dental hygiene product.
According to the brand it combines brushing, flossing and mouth-washing into one device.
Described as an "entirely new way to clean your teeth", along with an oscillating brush head, the device "uses a camera to floss while you brush".
Set near the brush head, a 100,000-pixel macro-lens camera tracks the teeth to find gaps, which are sprayed with mouthwash.
According to the brand, this replaces the need to floss and the device was created in response to reports that 9 out of 10 people don't floss regularly enough.
"Flossing is an awkward and time-consuming chore," said Dyson founder James Dyson.
"Few of us do it even though we know we should. Dyson engineers and scientists have spent well over a decade understanding oral care regimes and how nasties build up in the mouth. Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth."
In response to the low levels of flossing, Dyson created an alternative method of removing plaque that utilises the camera-directed mouthwash.
The system was trained using 470,000 dental images to recognise gaps between teeth. Using an artificial intelligence-powered algorithm, it takes 28 images per second to track the teeth and predict gaps.
"We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque, how to improve cleaning performance while brushing," said Dyson.
"By combining a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics, advanced brushing technologies, connectivity and WiFi, Dyson CameraJet introduces an entirely new way to keep your mouth healthy."
The mouthwash, which is dispensed in a conical spray, is contained in a transparent, 12.5 millilitre tank near the top of the toothbrush.
According to the brand, this holder utilises a pump to be kept under pressure, which gives it an "anti-gravity" capability that allows the toothbrush to continue to spray when held upside down.
The tank is refilled in three seconds from a dedicated docking station.
Along with the device, the brand developed its own toothpaste and mouthwash for use with the Dyson CameraJet.
Available in Ginger Mint and Spearmint, the toothpaste was designed to be non-foaming so that it doesn't block the camera.
Dyson, which is best known for its innovative vacuum cleaners, also previously released its first headphones.
