UK-based company Clicks Technology has followed up its Blackberry-like keyboard accessory for smartphones with the Clicks Communicator, a phone built for messaging, launched at this week's Consumer Electronics Show.

The Clicks Communicator brings together all of a user's messages and emails on their home screen, giving them a phone primarily tailored to communication.

With a QWERTY keyboard on the bottom, it is designed for people who enjoy the tactility of physical buttons and want to divide their phone usage across multiple devices tailored to specific functions.

"Communicator is to a smartphone what a Kindle is to an iPad," said Clicks chief marketing officer Jeff Gadway. "It's a complementary product that stands on its own, optimised for a specific purpose."

"In the case of Clicks Communicator, that means communicating with confidence in a noisy world," continued Gadway.

According to Clicks, the phone excels at "messaging, triage and responsiveness while leaving content capture and entertainment to primary devices".

In addition to merging inboxes, the Clicks Communicator helps users identify important messages through a notification light that can be customised to show different colours or patterns depending on the sender or app.

The light is located on the side button, so users can see the notification whether the phone is facing up or down.

Clicks' goal is that users can see their important messages quickly and respond efficiently without having their focus pulled away by other apps.

"The two-phone lifestyle is becoming more common," said Clicks co-founder Michael Fisher. "Some people need a second phone for work, others want to be more intentional about how they use technology."

"At a time when everything is fighting for our attention, your phone should excel at helping you take action, not feeding distraction."

While messaging is the Clicks Communicator's primary purpose, the phone is also capable of making calls and running other apps, like any Android smartphone.

It has a square AMOLED display and is a bit more compact than most smartphones at 13.1 centimetres tall and 170 grams in weight.

It is available in three colours – Smoke, Clover and Onyx – and can be personalised with interchangeable back covers.

Clicks is launching the Communicator phone at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world's biggest technology fair, held annually in Las Vegas. The company is now taking reservations but has not indicated when the phone will ship.

Swiss company Punkt also launched a phone at this year's event – the MC03, tailored for privacy – while electronics brand LG showed off a humanoid robot capable of doing household chores and Lego went high-tech with its Smart Brick.
