Spanish practice Plantea Estudio has completed a barre studio in Madrid, with a moody colour palette dominated by browns and reds.

Lean Studio hosts barre classes, a style of low-impact workout with roots in ballet that also incorporates elements of pilates and yoga.

The studio is located on the ground floor of a historic building in Madrid's city centre – a busy location that Plantea Estudio softened by creating a sense of calm throughout the interior.

Its warm, moody atmosphere is worlds apart from the traffic outside, as well as from the space's former life as the office for a parcel delivery company, with vinyl floors, suspended drop ceilings and LED lighting fixtures.

"[The space's new purpose] required isolation and calm within a noisy and chaotic environment," Plantea Estudio told Dezeen.

"The microcement and linoleum on the floors and the limewash paint and microcement on the walls come together in a single colour palette, creating a sophisticated and serene atmosphere."

The dance studio's walls are lined with mirrors or dramatic curtains

The main dance studio is lined with floor-to-ceiling translucent curtains as well as mirrors to help participants ensure correct form. They are also supported by wooden barre bars that run horizontally across the surface of the mirrors.

Barre uses the participant's own body weight as well as equipment, including hand weights and exercise balls, which are stored in open shelving at the entrance to the L-shaped studio space.

The entryway features an oval-shaped marble table that is reflected in the ovoid mirror

The equipment serves a decorative as well as a functional purpose, with the mats, blocks and balls all matching the colour and material palette of the space.

By considering these details, the studio aimed to ensure that the gear causes minimal visual clutter when in use and when stored away between sessions.

This sense of orderliness also permeates into the reception area and changing rooms, which share the studio's absence of clutter, soft colour palette and considered material choices.

A marble-topped central table anchors the reception area, where its rounded shape is echoed in an oval mirror and a faux skylight overhead.

Faux skylights are also found in the changing room along with glowing wall lights, which combine to create a gentle lighting scheme far removed from the clinical brightness of mainstream exercise venues.

Marble reappears here in the form of a slim mirror shelf and a hefty washbasin, where the stone's natural texture is complemented by banks of wood-fronted lockers.

"On some occasions, in this type of space, architects place the focus on the space itself – materials are chosen in an attempt to construct a striking and memorable image," said the studio.

"In our architecture, the user is always placed at the centre."

Plantea Estudio was established in 2012 by brothers Lorenzo and Luis Gil, who were joined by architect Carla Morán in 2017. The studio specialises in small-scale hospitality, workplace, retail and residential projects.

Dezeen has covered a range of the studio's projects in the past, including a florist in Madrid informed by the theatres and a Berlin bakery with a material palette informed by its urban location.
