Foster + Partners and developer Silverstein Properties have released renderings of the Two World Trade Center skyscraper in New York, which will complete the development and contain headquarters for finance company American Express.

Following a design that was leaked in 2022, new images show a stepped supertall skyscraper that will reach 1,226 feet (373 metres) at 55 storeys.

Located across from Santiago Calatrava's ribbed Oculus train station and next to the Perelman Center by Rex, Two World Trade has been under development for nearly 20 years.

In 2020, following a back-and-forth between development partners, Foster + Partners replaced BIG as the architect of the skyscraper.

It will span more than nearly two million square feet (185,806 square metres), with the capacity to host 10,000 workers and be singularly dedicated to American Express offices.

"Our new headquarters will be more than just a building – it will be a place for our colleagues to feel energised, inspired, and proud – a home for innovation, interaction, and growth," said American Express CEO Stephen J Squeri.

"We're excited to work with our partners and local leaders to shape this exciting new era for American Express and Lower Manhattan."

According to American Express, the building will contain  "fully-electric, energy-efficient systems" in the pursuit of LEED certification.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 and be completed in 2031.

It is the final piece of the World Trade Center development, which includes the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, One, Two, Three, and Four World Trade, the Oculus and the Perelman Arts Center.

Two World Trade Center will be located at the corner of the site, and currently contains a PATH subway entrance and a plaza.

The Perelman Performing Arts Center was completed in 2023, while Santiago Calatrava also completed a nearby church to replace a 19th-century church that was destroyed on 11 September 2001 as part of the redevelopment of the site.
