Donald Trump to line Washington DC Reflecting Pool in "American flag blue"

US president Donald Trump has announced that he has hired a contractor to repair and repaint the base of the "filthy" Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC, which reportedly is prone to leaks.

In a video posted to the White House website, President Trump said he's working with a pool company to scrub and grout the existing granite of the memorial pool in the nation's capital.

The plan includes covering up the granite base for a blue liner.

Trump said the Administration was accepting bids to update leaks to the pool, and that a proposed Biden Administration project included completely removing and replacing the granite to fix ongoing leaks.

"It was filthy, dirty, and it leaked like a sieve for many years," said Trump. "And they had bids to fix it. They were going to take the stone out, which was granite – very expensive, very thick – and replace it with stone, and it was going to cost $300 million, and it was going to take maybe more than three years."

"And I said – no, there's a better way of doing it."

Instead, Trump said he hired a contractor he's worked with previously on swimming pool projects to do the job "for a good price". Beyond re-grouting the Reflecting Pool, the contractor will also line the basin in a bright "American flag blue" liner, reportedly selected by Trump.

"Now we have a nice, clean surface on which we're putting an industrial-grade swimming pool topping," said Trump. "It'll last for 40 or 50 years."

"It's a story in business. For much less money, it will look far more beautiful than it did in 1922 when they built it."

The Reflecting Pool, which is not used for swimming, has undergone maintenance throughout the years, including the last major overhaul by the Obama Administration, which was completed in 2012, as well as some ongoing work toward algae prevention.

Trump's reference to the "$300 million" project likely connotes repairs to the pool initiated by the Biden Administration, which never began.

The project is also reportedly underway in anticipation of the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America, and the upcoming World Cup football tournament.

Trump has proposed a slew of changes to the nation's capital, including a White House grand ballroom, a new grand arch and a "Classical" Washington Commanders stadium. All of the projects remain to be completed.
