Apple and Issey Miyake create expandable "extra pocket" for iPhones

Fashion brand Issey Miyake has teamed up with Apple to launch the iPhone Pocket, a wearable smartphone carrier that stretches, much like the fashion brand's pleated clothing, to hold any iPhone.
Each sling is made of a single, continuous piece of yarn, 3D-knitted into a ribbed open structure that expands to fit the phone alongside other small everyday items.

Available with either a short or long strap, it can be handheld, tied to a bag or worn directly on the body to offer an additional pocket.
"The design of iPhone Pocket speaks to the bond between iPhone and its user, while keeping in mind that an Apple product is designed to be universal in aesthetic and versatile in use," said the brand's design director Yoshiyuki Miyamae.

"The simplicity of its design echoes what we practice at Issey Miyake – the idea of leaving things less defined to allow for possibilities and personal interpretation," continued Miyamae.
Issey Miyake developed the 3D-knitted construction in-house to provide structural integrity while resembling the company's iconic pleats in both form and function.
This allows the iPhone Pocket to expand to house more items, as well as allowing the user to take a peek at their phone without taking it out of the bag.
Apple Design Studio was involved in the design and production throughout, with the final colours chosen to mix and match with the colours of different iPhone models.

"Apple and Issey Miyake share a design approach that celebrates craftsmanship, simplicity, and delight," said Apple’s vice president of industrial design Molly Anderson.
"This clever extra pocket exemplifies those ideas and is a natural accompaniment to our products."

The limited edition product will be available in select Apple stores later this week.
Other recent design collaborations have seen the tech company spotlight four emerging studios at Design Miami.Paris and unveil a mirrored obelisk by Sabine Marcelis at Apple Park.
