Persian rugs add "element of surreal" to MW.S offices by Charlap Hyman & Herrero

American architecture studio Charlap Hyman & Herrero has blended antique Persian rugs with modern furniture to introduce pattern across the New York offices of Mouthwash Studio.
For its expansion from Los Angeles to NYC, Mouthwash Studio (MW.S) found a space in Lower Manhattan creative hub WSA and asked fellow bicoastal designers Charlap Hyman & Herrero (CH&H) to outfit it.

The 237-square-foot (22-square-metre) space, which enjoys lofty views across the city and the Brooklyn Bridge, was "treated as an experiment around the intersection of antiquity and industrial design" according to the team.
Antique Persian rugs are laid wall-to-wall across the floor and continue up a structural column to provide a centrepiece for the compact office.

These richly patterned carpets feature deep burgundy, navy and sand hues that form intricate patterns within equally decorative borders.
The offcuts of these rugs were used to dress a sofa, throw cushions and floor pillows, adding more layers of pattern to a casual seating area and bringing "an element of surreal to the space".

Meanwhile, the back and window walls are lined with a custom stainless-steel desk system fabricated by Riley Duncan, with clean lines and shiny surfaces contrasting the richly textured carpeting.
Similarly, industrial shelves are affixed to the wall beside the sofa and display a collection of books and small objects.
"Stainless steel shelving acts like a trove of curiosities with items such as antique frames, handmade ceramics, as well as a Clam Shell Lamp designed by CH&H and Green River Project," said the team.
"Other elements include a precious Victorian mirror that adorns the carpeted column, a 17th-century Venetian Baroque landscape painting by Bartolomeo Pedon, and Josef Hoffman's Fledermaus chair sourced by Jacqueline Sullivan," said the team.

Another CH&H piece – a paper, plaster, and silver nitrate sculpture designed in collaboration with Shun Kinoshita for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden – is mounted on the carpeted column.
Earlier this year, the studio completed the conversion of a former factory in Upstate New York into the Pocketbook Hudson hotel, which comparably blends industrial finishes and antique textiles.

MW.S was founded in 2019 and also recently unveiled a new office space in Los Angeles, designed by Aunt Studio around glass-block partitions and walnut bleachers.
It also collaborated on a Mexican restaurant underneath a railway in LA.
