Interior designer Tatjana von Stein used walnut burl wood, metal, lacquers and silk wallpaper for this central London apartment that nods to art deco design, but with a contemporary angle.
Located in the art deco-style 60 Curzon building designed by French architect Thierry Despont, the interior of the 170-square-metre flat was filled with furniture designed by Von Stein.
The designer also sourced a number of vintage pieces from different eras to decorate the home.
"The apartment really lent itself as an extension of the materials used in my own furniture collection, Mise en Scène, in the vein of the art deco era, where opulence meets industrial influences in a symphony of reflective surfaces such as glass and lacquer; keeping the rooms dancing and talking," Von Stein told Dezeen.
She played with materials to give the rooms in the two-bedroom apartment a luxurious, tactile feel.
"Walnut and walnut burl materials were incorporated for richness and depth, whilst metals and silks brought new life to furniture and the walls," the designer said.
Outside the main bedroom, a silk wallpaper with handpainted white flowers on a red background adds a decorative touch and a "moment of theatre".
"The vestibule into the main bedroom is such an important moment to master, allowing a moment of theatre and joy which we brought through this gorgeous Iksel wallpaper, in both colour and motifs," Von Stein said.
The designer used a colour palette of cream and deep green hues for the rest of the apartment.
A pale green was used to bring out the hues of the veiny marble countertop and backsplash in the kitchen, while rich green velvet curtains decorate the main bedroom.
In the guest bedroom, heavy mustard-yellow curtains complement the terracotta-hued bed and two bedside artworks with brown details.
"Our base colour on the walls and ceiling was neutral, but greens, terracottas and yellows, which all are derived from nature, represent an ongoing mark in our work and really added this rich layer of warmth throughout the apartment; subdued and rich yet not overpowering," Von Stein explained.
Scattered throughout the home are vintage pieces sourced by Von Stein, carefully chosen to complement the furniture she herself designed.
"I work with a number of antiques dealers and am always on the lookout, particularly during the sourcing stage," the designer said.
"I love mixing styles and eras together, testing the senses and creating special moments throughout," she continued.
"I included two favourite antiques in the space; one being the modernist table lamps sitting on the 1930s Jules Leleu bedside tables in the guest bedroom and the green chinoiseries – they really set the tone!"
To Von Stein, drawing on art deco design for the interior came naturally, as it has been a big influence on her work in general.
"Overall our mission was to nod to the art deco-inspired design of the building – an easy task as it's a natural influence in my work – from a contemporary angle with a particular person or buyer in mind; we envisioned a cultured collection with a penchant for the arts, design and entertainment that Mayfair has to offer," she concluded.
"An entertainer's home in the heart of the city."
Other recent interior designs in London's Mayfair include a pied-à-terre by Child Studio and a restaurant with an arts-and-crafts-style interior by Pirajean Lees.
