Dezeen Showroom: Australian furniture brand King Living has announced the US launch of its modular 1977 sofa, a modern reimagining of its first sofa that was debuted in the late 1970s.
The 1977 sofa is based on a previous sofa by King Living named The Award, which was released in 1977. Its successor features plump, organically curved modules with removable tailored covers.
The modules include a long two-seater, a square sofa chair, an extended chaise, ottomans and a curved, enveloping corner piece. They can be combined into novel configurations or pulled apart and used individually.
Unusual configurations are possible, as is the mixing of different colours to create a fun and playful aesthetic.
"The 1977 is a showcase of our commitment to innovation and our strength in Australian design," said King Living founder David King.
"When we first launched the inaugural sofa, we could have never imagined that so many years on, it would still have the same design relevance it did nearly 50 years ago."
The 1977 sofa is made of layered CFC-free high-resilience polyurethane foams and fibres wrapped around a steel frame and suspension system that comes with a 25-year warranty. The covers are available in two fabric collections developed exclusively for the sofa, and can be removed for machine washing or replacing as needed.
