UK studio Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled photos of Danjiang Bridge under construction in Taiwan, which is set to become the world's longest single-tower, cable-stayed bridge.

Set to open on 12 May 2026, the bridge's main structure was recently completed with the installation of the final segment of steel decking, fully connecting the two sides of the Tamsui River estuary.

Danjiang Bridge is an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge. Its longest section spans 450 metres, with Y-shaped concrete columns propping up the bridge closer to land.

Its cables fan out asymmetrically from a single 200-metre-tall concrete mast and are engineered to withstand extreme weather and seismic events.

"Danjiang Bridge is the world's longest single-tower, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge and is integral to the region's comprehensive infrastructure upgrading program," said Zaha Hadid Architects.

The structure was designed to reduce traffic congestion on small local roads by connecting highways on either side of the Tamsui River. It is also hoped to ease traffic on Guandu Bridge, which is located five kilometres upstream in New Taipei.

Zaha Hadid Architects' goal was to create a bridge mast with a sculptural silhouette that is as slim as possible, minimising obstruction of views of the setting sun.

"Determined by detailed 3D modelling and mapping of the estuary, the position of the bridge's sculptural mast within the river and the height of its road deck above the water's surface have been calculated to maintain safe passage for river vessels and minimise impeding sunset views from popular viewpoints along the river," said Zaha Hadid Architects.

"The single-mast design also reduces the structure's impact on the riverbed in line with stringent programs established to protect the estuary's ecosystem."

With the bridge's main structure complete, the next stages of construction will include laying asphalt on the road, installing lighting and conducting structural load tests.

The Danjiang Bridge will feature pedestrian and cycle lanes when it opens for use next year.

Other projects recently completed by Zaha Hadid Architects include the 60,000-seat Xi'an International Football Centre in China and a multi-storey leisure complex in Hong Kong designed as a village.
