Kéré Architecture unveils updated Las Vegas Museum of Art designs

The Las Vegas Museum of Art has released updated images of its headquarters, being designed by Burkinabè architect studio Kéré Architecture with SOM, a building informed by the desert and the city's modernist architecture.
The newly updated renderings follow news announced last year that the studio led by Pritzker-prize-winning architect Diébédo Francis Kéré is designing the building, which will be located in a former parking lot in the Symphony Park area of Downtown Las Vegas. SOM is the architect of record.

The images show a trapezoidal main volume covered in diamond-shaped bricks that will be made from locally sourced stones, according to the team.
A circular volume is pictured inside the base of the building, which will hold a grand staircase, while a wide, latticed roof sits on top.
The updated design was informed by the surrounding Red Rock Mountains of the Mojave Desert, as well as Las Vegas's modernist architecture.

"Kéré’s design draws inspiration from the Mojave Desert and Las Vegas's rich history of modernist architecture," said the museum.
The generous roof eave is also intended to create a "front porch" in the surrounding plaza.
"Las Vegas is a place of architectural marvels and of a timeless, awe-inspiring desert landscape," said Kéré.
"We see the Las Vegas Museum of Art as a gathering place where the entire community can recognise itself and take pride in a building that reflects the history and spirit of the city and the beauty of its natural surroundings."

A single previous rendering depicted the building with a similar form and material palette, although its facade contained triangular cutaways, and it did not have an overhanging roof.
It will be Las Vegas's "first freestanding art museum". The programming will be supported in part by a partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) which is set to provide consultation, as well as lend artworks. LACMA is set to open its own new building, designed by Peter Zumthor, next year.
The museum will open a separate exhibition space in fall 2026 to preview its offerings, before the official building opening.
Kéré Architecture also recently released designs for its first building in South America and designed the UNESCO Virtual Museum of Stolen Cultural Objects.
