The Fremantle cargo port informed the corrugated metal cladding and steel-framed awnings of Henville Street House, a family home in Perth, Australia, by local studio Philip Stejskal Architecture.

Located on a compact urban site, Philip Stejskal Architecture designed the home to have a close relationship to its garden while avoiding overlooking.

It is organised around a patio and has a skeletal steel frame that will gradually be overgrown by climbing plants.

"It’s a simple project constrained by budget and a challenging site," studio founder Philip Stejskal told Dezeen.

"The design consists of a literal box clad in corrugated iron, harking back to the original workers cottages of the area," he continued.

"This is able to withstand the harsh coastal environment, does not require maintenance and provides a cost-effective solution."

With a one-metre level change from the north to south of the site, the home was positioned so that its sunken living, dining and kitchen spaces step up into the garden. Here, a large sill doubles as a seating area alongside large sliding glass doors.

Passing through this threshold, Henville Street House opens out onto a patio that Stejskal calls an "outdoor room", sheltered by a double-height steel frame.

The upper section of this frame has been clad in metal grilles that will gradually be overgrown by climbing plants, with the same grilles used to create a low fence around the home.

Shaded by a retractable awning, this steel frame also incorporates a terrace for the three bedrooms on the first floor, and wraps around to the front of the home, where it forms a small awning above the entrance and garage.

"The outdoor room is enveloped in a vertical trellis that will green over time, and roofed by a retractable fabric awning," explained Stejskal.

"In winter, the deciduous green wall opens up to embrace the sun, whilst in summer it offers protection and gives the owners another room for outdoor living and dining," he added.

Inside Henville Street House, the industrial-style metalwork of the exterior is contrasted by pale curtains and dark Australian hardwoods used for built-in storage and wall linings.

Facing the garden, the internal facades are clad in narrow, vertical battens, which have also been used at the base of a window at the front of the home.

Elsewhere in Australia, Studio Bright created a blockwork home in Melbourne that is wrapped by metal mesh screens, which will gradually be covered with climbing plants to form a leafy arbour shading its interiors.

Other Australian houses recently featured on Dezeen include Bondi House, a steel-framed "kit of parts" by Nick Kent Design, and an off-grid home in the Victorian Alps by Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors.
