Yinka Ilori covers New York Bloomingdale's in "modular" flowers for pop-up

British-American designer Yinka Ilori has created a facade installation and pop-up shop at the flagship of American department store Bloomingdale's in New York City, informed by multiple meanings of flowers.
Located on 59th Street in Manhattan, the Bloomingdale's facade and interior space, the Carousel, was outfitted in brightly-colored flower motifs, including twisting vines and an upright, cactus-like plant for the Cherish Your Magic installation by Ilori.
The designer said that he drew on his reflective nature of flowers.
"When I reflect on flowers, what strikes me is that even a brief glance can give you a micro-moment of being fully immersed in the present," Ilori told Dezeen.
"In this work, the flowers take on a modular, almost mechanical character, emphasising the tools and components that everyone carries within themselves, which you discover when you are fully present."
"At the same time, the flowers reflect the industrial character of New York City, with its inhabitants as resilient as wildflowers."
For the temporary display, the facade, external displays and Carousel were adorned with large-scale graphics. The window displays feature fashion manikins surrounded by graphics and vine-like sculptures.
Inside, furniture, such as stools and display cases, was also moulded into matching, 3D-versions of the flowers.
Large, blue hands are also integrated into the design, which Ilori said illustrate how "magic unfolds when we embrace our uniqueness and respect others".
"With the hands coming together, these elements depict community, collaboration, and celebration, with vines spreading like blossoms of hope across the sphere," he said.
A corner of the Carousel was dedicated to a collaboration with video game company PlayStation, which displays PlayStation x Yinka Ilori-branded clothing and duffel bags with blue carpeting and light-purple bean bag chairs.
The Cherish Your Magic pop-up features additional clothing and homeware objects by Ilori, including tea towels, zip pouches, dining chairs and a ping pong set.
Elsewhere in the store, the colourful motifs can be found in lighting soffits.
"I wanted the experience to draw people in the same way that contemplating a flower can draw you into the present moment," said Ilori.
Other recent colourful retail experiences in New York City include a Louis Vuitton and Murakami pop-up store and a pop-up by designer Gustaf Westman that took place in Williamsburg.
