Ten eco-conscious products made from pioneering materials

In the face of the climate crisis, which the furniture industry is a contributor to, designers are turning to pioneering new materials.
Composites containing waste products and upcycled materials are being used to create furniture pieces that can be recycled more easily at the end of their lifespan.

Gomo armchair by Hugo Passos for Fredericia
Danish furniture brand Fredericia and designer Hugo Passos aimed to achieve "a new standard in circular comfort" in this task chair.
The Gomo armchair features covers that can be removed and washed as needed to extend the chair's lifespan, as well as minimal glue and removable padding, allowing for ease of separation and recycling at the end of its lifespan.
PVC from post-consumer construction materials, such as window frames and guttering, are used to create these tiles by Dutch company Pretty Plastic.
The company's tiles come in a choice of three styles and four colours, and are primarily used for building facades.

HÅG Tion mesh task chair by Flokk
Scandinavian furniture manufacturer Flokk used 97 per cent recycled aluminium and 94 per cent post-consumer plastics for its HÅG Tion mesh task chair.
The chair has a stripped-back aesthetic, with users able to select from various base styles, finishes and upholstery materials.

Australian studio Heliograf has released a versatile iteration of its fish-shaped light that can function as a table, wall or pendant lamp.
Like all prior versions of the lamp, Light Soy Flex's body is made from 75 per cent certified ocean-bound plastic. Its shape references the appearance of soy sauce dropper bottles, which contribute to plastic waste.

Eiger garden chair by Sebastian Alberdi for Füür
Lengths of fabric pulled taut to create the seat and backrest of this chair by designer Sebastian Alberdi and Swiss eco home brand Füür are actually repurposes fire hoses.
The Eiger garden chair comprises an iroko wooden frame with straps wound around it in three colours – Red, Stone or Green. These are not dyed for the piece, instead left as the colours that the Swiss fire service uses to indicate the hose's diameter.
Big Glow lighting by Studio Truly Truly and Woolmark for Rakumba
Designed by Dutch design firm Studio Truly Truly and industry certification company Woolmark have created a lampshade made from a combination of wool and bioplastic for Australian lighting brand Rakumba.
Big Glow lighting comprises rounded shades that come in a singular true-to-material beige colour. Its material makeup allows it to be composted at the end of its lifespan.

US brand Designtex's Wannabe textile is made entirely from 100 per cent recycled plastic bottles – according to the brand, there are 15 bottles in every yard of the fabric.
Three styles – one flat and two ribbed – can be chosen from, as well as a spectrum of colours.
Corka pendant light by Samuel Wilkinson for Zero Lighting
A conical pendant lamp made from cork, created by British designer Samuel Wilkinson has been released by lighting brand Zero Lighting.
The aptly-named Corka pendant light comes in three natural finishes – natural, brown and mixed – that celebrate the renewable material it is made from.
Slab seating collection by Jumphol Socharoentham for Waste is More
Designer Jumphol Socharoentham and Thai brand Waste is More's Slab seating collection features seats and backrests made from used coffee grounds, sugarcane waste and recycled plastic.
The waste-based material has a flecked appearance and comes in various colourways.
Woodio Soft washbasin collection by Woodio
Finnish bathroom brand Woodio has stripped back the shapes of the sinks in its Woodio Soft washbasin collection.
The range includes counter-mounted, recessed and wall-hung basins, all made from the brand's own composite material, which contains woodchips and comes in 15 colours.
