Sheppard Robson creates "beating heart" for University of Edinburgh campus
A campus building completed by Sheppard Robson for the University of Edinburgh, which has been shortlisted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award, features in this video produced by Jim Stephenson.
The film forms part of a series being published by Dezeen in collaboration with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) to highlight the annual award's 2025 shortlist.
In the video, viewers are introduced to the Nucleus Building, which provides teaching, learning and social spaces for students and staff at the University of Edinburgh.
University professor Iain Gordon describes the project as a "beating heart" for the university, while partner at Sheppard Robson Stacey Phillips explains how the design prioritises "legibility".
"The distribution of spaces in the building is a bit of a no-brainer in terms of it responds to its context," Phillips said. "The study spaces, which need light and you want them to have views and connection between inside and outside, and connection to internal spaces as well – a lot of the other spaces don't demand any of that."
"You've got a number of lecture theatres, which are big containers, effectively – it made sense to put them behind the study spaces and social spaces facing the green heart," she added.
Established in 2002, the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award is an annual award that highlights Scottish projects, with this year's winner set to be announced on 5 December.
RIAS said this year's four-strong shortlist, which ranges from rural infrastructure projects to urban public-realm initiatives, celebrates "architecture's place alongside other disciplines".
Shortlisted alongside the Nucleus Building are the renovation of Union Terrace Gardens by Stallan-Brand and LDA Design, the historic Fairburn Tower renewed by Simpson & Brown and the stone Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge by Moxon Architects.
