Dezeen Showroom: recycled and recyclable aluminium forms the frame of this pared-back table and chair set, designed by Ronan Bouroullec for Spanish furniture brand Kettal.

The chairs in the Passage collection are characterised by a curved backrest made from a single piece of extruded aluminium, which is slotted onto the frame via hollow tubes on each side.

Bouroullec developed dining and club chair iterations, available with and without armrests, alongside a matching coffee table and dining tables in three sizes.

The use of aluminium reduces the carbon footprint from manufacturing and makes the design durable enough to be used both indoors and outdoors, and in settings ranging from residential to commercial.

Passage tables and chairs — The design can be used inside and outside

Depending on the setting, tabletops can also be rendered in wood and the seat of the chairs can be finished in fabric, rope, webbing, straw or wood instead of aluminium.

"At first sight, the chair seems simple enough," Kettal said. "But when we look at the details, we realise the technical sophistication of this chair, the high quality of the welds, the precision of the joints and the finesse of the backrest."
