The Cleveland Browns NFL team has released a video showing its controversial proposed stadium in Cleveland, USA, following the team's owners recommitting to the scheme.
Announced last spring, the complex centres around an indoor 67,500-seat stadium with a sloped transparent roof hemmed in by several smaller volumes, all with angular, wing-shaped roofs.
The NFL team released an animation showcasing the complex after months of push-back and litigation from city officials and locals, who have protested the use of tax-payer money for the proposed move from the current stadium on the city's lakefront to the suburb of Brook Park.
The Cleveland Browns' proposed stadium has been revealed in a video
In the video, the stadium is shown on a former industrial site adjacent to the airport, with fans funnelling through the surrounding buildings.
Yesterday, the club's owner – Halsam Sports Group (HSG) – released a memo doubling down on the proposed stadium plans, highlighting the benefits of the stadium and calling it a "catalyst" for the region.
"First, we've done extensive diligence and have concluded that a new enclosed stadium with an adjacent mixed-used development is the most viable long-term solution," said HSG.
"The enclosed stadium will draw millions of visitors to the region throughout the year for premier large-scale events which will drive the fiscal and economic impact necessary to pay for the public portion of the funding model."
In the memo, HSG said that it and its partners were "prepared to invest more than $2 billion (£1.5 billion)" in order to bring the development to fruition.
HSG also highlighted the stadium's accessibility for its fanbase, of which 85 per cent live outside of Cleveland, according to the company.
Cleveland's transportation authority RTA said it is working on plans to connect the nearby rail station with the development.
HKS's design features a sloped roof and angular exterior, some opaque and some clad with glass.
Fans will move into the stadium under a series of massive cantilevered roofs.
The stadium will be partially embedded into the ground to allow for more fans to be in the lower bowl while complying with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
The planned move was designed based on HSG's desire to create something "truly transformational in the [NFL]," HKS principal Lance Evans told Forbes in December 2024.
The current stadium, which was built in 1999, underwent massive renovations in 2014, and the Browns have a lease on the stadium with the city until 2028.
Other projects underway in Cleveland include a redevelopment of its riverfront with a masterplan designed by Adjaye Associates, whose founder, David Adjaye, was accused of sexual misconduct in 2023.
