Eiger garden chair by Sebastian Alberdi for Füür

Dezeen Showroom: upcycled fire hoses make up the backrest and seat of this garden chair created by designer Sebastian Alberdi in collaboration with Swiss eco home brand Füür.

The Eiger garden chair is part of Füür's Gummi Line collection, which repurposes decommissioned fire hoses into design objects that take advantage of the materials' continuing durability.

In the Eiger chair, the hose is cut and stitched to make straps that wrap around a varnished iroko wood frame, forming a seat with a classic relaxed outdoor aesthetic.

The hose is made of a woven polyester mesh and synthetic rubber that Füür says make it comfortable to sit on, while the iroko wood provides a natural, warm complement that is ideal for outdoors due to its resistance to weather and insects.

Upcycling the hoses uses less energy than recycling, and Füür continues the low-impact approach by avoiding dyeing. Instead, the straps are presented in their three original colours – Red, Stone or Green – which the Swiss fire service uses to indicate the hose's diameter.

The Eiger chair is handmade in Spain, and Füür recommends its use indoors as well as out.
