Dezeen Showroom: designer Thomas Heatherwick worked with lighting brand Tala on a lamp designed to help users tune into the natural rhythms of sleeping and waking.

Aptly named the Wake Sleep light, the lamp comprises a mouth-blown rippled glass bulb containing an LED filament, which was designed to mimic the sun. This sits atop a hand-glazed ceramic base containing an integrated digital clock display.

The light has a simple two-part composition

The bulb casts a warm-toned glow and the base, available in a single colourway called Pebble White, is rotatable, allowing users to gently brighten and dim the light as needed.

Users are also able to select from four wake up sounds and seven sleep sounds, the timings of which can be controlled via an app. It is compatible with smart home devices too.

The warm-toned, rippling bulb is reminiscent of the sun

"Our inspiration was drawn from the bulb and the light emitting element as a metaphor for the sun, and the base a natural metaphor for the earth," said designer Thomas Heatherwick.

"We deliberately wanted to avoid visible plastic, shiny metal, and so the palette of glass for the bulb and undulating ceramic for the base felt to us much more in tune with the topic of natural sleep."
