Dezeen Showroom: Thai practice Anew Craft Studio applied the Japanese wood charring technique of shou sugi ban to this chair, which has a form that references meditation practices.

Anew Craft Studio's Nitcharn Kotawan and Sunthorn Philaiwan designed the solid teak wood Vipassa chair to have a quiet strength and simplicity, inspired by the Buddhist concept and meditation practice of Vipassana.

The Vipassa chair is blackened using shou sugi ban

This is married with the process of shou sugi ban, which is known to enhance the durability of wood while also blackening it and adding visual richness.

"This process transforms the wood into more than a structural element – it becomes a poetic embodiment of nature, marked by flame and time," said the Bangkok-based studio, which specialises in woodwork.

The designers said that they saw Vipassa as a meditation in form, inviting users to reflect on stillness, presence and cultural continuity.

"With a design that bridges craftsmanship and philosophy, this piece speaks to a growing audience seeking meaning, sustainability and artistic value in the objects that shape their spaces," they continued.
