Dezeen Showroom: Finnish brand Vaarnii has unveiled the latest additions to its Maasto furniture range, designed by Ronan Bouroullec and with fabric by Kvadrat, at 3 Days of Design.

Vaarnii first launched the Maasto collection in 2024 with the 016 Maasto dining chair and dining armchair, and has now expanded it with the 016 Maasto Dining Table and 016 Maasto Bar Stool, as well as adding seating upholstered with Kvadrat fabric.

The collection is unusual in that it combines both solid pine and plywood, and marks the first time that Vaarnii had worked with plywood. The company creates its pine furniture in local factories in Finland.

Bouroullec says the combination represents something new that can be done with wooden furniture.

"There are a lot of good reasons for mixing solid wood and plywood in the Maasto range and for the way the pieces look, all to do with practical things like logistics and material stability and price," the designer said.

"But yet, Maasto has a quality that I love but can't explain. It is difficult to do something new with wooden furniture and this is new."

It now also features upholstered seating in Kvadrat fabrics

The two original chairs have been upholstered in Alle, a Kvadrat fabric designed by Bouroullec.

Like the chairs, the table will be made from solid pine and plywood, while the bar stool will combine a cutout plywood leg and a solid pine seat. It will have two copper-covered footrails.

Vaarnii has also unveiled a new finish for its pine furniture, a black stain that marks a striking alternative to its natural-wood finish.

Maasto also comes in a black-stained finish

"At Vaarnii, we are constantly exploring what pine can do, what it can be, and our range now includes pine wood in many different forms," co-founder Antti Hirvonen said.

"Our explorations naturally led us to consider stained wood as one such evolution of pine, but it has been a long and careful process to find a finish that feels intuitive, authentic, simple and brutal enough to be Vaarnii in spirit."

The Maasto Dining Chair launches in black during 3 Days of Design, and the full Maasto range will be available in black in early autumn.
