Triennale Milano president Stefano Boeri discusses the institution's 24th International Exhibition in this exclusive video interview produced by Dezeen.

"The aim of the exhibition is to show how inequality is present in different spheres of our lives," Boeri told Dezeen.

"Without considering inequalities it will be impossible to deal with the main challenges that humanity has to face in the coming years."

Over 350 architects, academics and thinkers from 72 different countries feature in the exhibition, creating a "constellation of ideas and possible solutions to reduce inequality".

Under the umbrella of inequality are the two sub-themes of geopolitics and biopolitics, which inform the layout of the exhibition.

On the ground floor are projects exploring geopolitics and how cities produce and reflect discrimination, as well as the gap between rich and poor.

"One of the most tragic and emblematic cases of inequalities in our urban environment was the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London," said Boeri.

Grenfell Next of Kin spokesperson Kimia Zabihyan worked with Triennale to curate a mini-exhibition featuring a series of memorial quits and artwork by some of the 72 people who died after a fire took hold of Grenfell tower on 14 June 2017.

Towards a More Equal Future by Norman Foster's foundation showcases designs for nuclear-powered batteries and a prototype living module for deployment in informal settlements.

The first floor, which focuses on the biopolitical dimension of inequality, features projects that examine bodies and human relationships.

Clay Corpus by American artist Theaster Gates is an installation that wraps around Triennale Milano's permanent display of furniture by renowned Milanese designer Ettore Sottsass.

It features thousands of pieces by Japanese artisan, Yoshihiro Koide, who worked with Japanese villagers using "art and craft as a way to improve quality of life," explained Boeri.

On the main staircase, a project by Italian data analyst Filippo Teoldi aims to connect geopolitics with biopolitics

Titled 471 Days, the special commission depicts the number of Palestinian and Israeli civilian casualties between 7 October 2023 and the ceasefire on 18 January 2025.

"471 Days is an installation that speaks in a very strong but at the same time delicate way," said Boeri.

"It's the real core of what we are trying to show with the 24th International Exhibition on inequalities."

The 24th International Exhibition at Triennale Milano in Milan, Italy, is free to access and runs until 9 November 2025 .

Triennale Milano International Exhibition takes place from 13 May to 9 November 2025 at Triennale Milano, Viale Emilio Alemagna, 6, 20121 Milano, Italy. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.
