Swooping stools referencing early surfboards and frosted acrylic lighting featured in this year's edition of The Mindcraft Project, an annual exhibition of Danish design and craft in Copenhagen.

The Mindcraft Project was on display at The Lab, an exhibition space in north Copenhagen.

Organised by Copenhagen Design Agency, the show spotlights 10 different Danish designers, studios and craftspeople every year.

This year's curator, Pil Bredahl, asked the participants to respond to "nature's geometry and laws of physics".

Among the resulting pieces was a trio of pressure-moulded timber veneer stools by designer Anne Dorthe Vester, called Ro.

The seats were crafted from curved components informed by early surfboards and traditional wooden oars, fastened by screws and central stainless steel joints.

Textile artist Lærke Lillelund was another exhibitor, who presented two cascading sculptural pendants made of silk and polyester organza that give the appearance of brightly coloured seaweed.

Lillelund looked to Japanese shibori techniques to create the pieces, experimenting with heat-setting and fabric manipulation.

Salvaged branch design piece
Bendixen and Baruël presented pieces made from salvaged branches

"This year's exhibition displays works in materials from the mineral kingdom, to soil, glass, wood and textile, all in different stages of man-made processing," explained Bredahl.

"All the selected exhibitors have their personal aesthetic language where they translate ancient knowledge through modern and relevant craft and design."

Veins & Grains is a plinth-like stool and console set by designer Anne Brandhøj, made from puddle-shaped slabs of elm supported by geometric pieces of oak.

Forest Sphere and Little Blue is another experimental project by design duo Bendixen and Baruël. The pair looked to their studio's setting on the Danish island of Møn by salvaging surplus pieces of spruce and ash from local deforestation projects.

The result is a series of timber sculptures woven with beeswax-treated cotton that explore the "architectural possibilities of wild branch structures".

Lighting also featured in the exhibition. Among the pieces was a collection of angular pendant and floor lamps by designer Kasper Kyster, crafted from structural steel brackets and frosted acrylic shades that diffuse light from integrated LED sources.

"This year's edition offers a peek into how nature's geometry and laws of physics inspire and influence some of Denmark's most unique designers and makers," said Bredahl.

The Mindcraft Project

The Mindcraft Project has been platforming Danish design and craft since 2008. Previous editions of the exhibition have presented pieces ranging from a chair in a leather jacket to a bouncy wooden bench.

Copenhagen is home to a thriving emerging design scene. At this year's 3 Days of Design city-wide festival, young creatives showed a series of seating that demonstrated their versatility.

The photography is by Benjamin Lund.

The Mindcraft Exhibition 2025 took place from 2 to 5 October 2025 online and at The Lab, Vermundsgade 40B, 2100 Copenhagen, Denmark. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.
