Danish design studio Swift Creatives has developed a collection of modular CCTV cameras with forms reminiscent of silly straws, promising to make home surveillance more playful.

The Sculptural Surveillance system consists of powder-coated aluminium parts with different shapes and functions, which can be combined into a bespoke solution and placed in gardens or landscaped areas.

Interchangeable heads can be used to incorporate different technical features such as cameras, lighting, motion sensors, speakers and tracing lamps.

Meanwhile, the shape of the home surveillance system can be customised through a range of options for the middle extender section, which is available in straight, bent or wavy shapes.

"This concept not only redefines functionality in home surveillance but also introduces a touch of sculptural and architectural sophistication to outdoor spaces," the design team explained.

Sculptural Surveillance was designed by Swift Creatives' innovation lab – an in-house research and development team based at the company's headquarters in Aarhus, Denmark.

The project aims to challenge conventional thinking around the utilitarian products that dominate the modern surveillance market and have become a familiar sight in urban environments.

Swift Creatives CEO Carsten Eriksen wanted to create a playful alternative to the bulky and boring appearance of current CCTV cameras, which led the design team to explore a range of sculptural forms.

The resulting Sculptural Surveillance system can be used to build everything from a tall, straight camera that rotates 360 degrees to surveil large areas, to more loopy, expressive shapes reminiscent of candy canes and crazy straws.

The bottom section consists of a screw fixture for straightforward installation into earth, wood or concrete.

Prototypes have been installed in locations around Denmark to demonstrate the product's potential and to gauge public opinion.

"So far, the reaction has been very positive and it's been great to see people responding with curiosity, excitement and genuine interest," Eriksen said.

Swift Creatives is an international design and innovation studio that develops products and experiences for brands including LG, Panasonic and Samsung.

The studio's previous concepts include a smart cooking system for domestic use that helps prepare restaurant-quality food using a sous vide water bath.

Swift Creatives was also awarded the top prize in a competition organised by Dezeen and Samsung, with its design for a digital mobile of gently moving fish.
