Promotion: American industrial design brand Studio Other has created a custom-engineered office table that can be used as a communal worktop or a duo of personal desks.

Los Angeles-based Studio Other designed the furniture to seamlessly transition between a collaborative table and two individual workstations, ideal for offices that prioritise space efficiency.

Co-designed with Californian company SAA Interiors + Architecture, the understated structure features a rounded tabletop. It glides apart and locks together in seconds, using a bespoke sliding rail system with integrated magnets.

The reconfigurable table can convert a traditional 10-person meeting room into workstations suitable for three to four people in under 60 seconds, without the need for extra resources, such as contractors or tools.

Studio Other explained that the table results in "architectural agility" and enables offices to quickly adapt to the changing demands of multi-functional working environments, "without sacrificing style or efficiency".

Here, the table empowers employees to create a suitable working environment for their needs and reduces the need for costly build-outs or expansions.

The furniture was designed for "office space that is no longer static"

"The office space is no longer static," said Studio Other. "It's evolving fast, and in this new era, adaptability is the supercharger for productivity that maximises every inch of space."

According to Studio Other, ensuring staff have quiet spaces to work is correlated with measurable gains in productivity and staff retention.

The brand added that, based on statistics by software company Density.io, while meeting rooms often occupy significant office space, their utilisation is low, with only 40 per cent of seats filled on average, per meeting.

"This leads to wasted space and resources, while employees struggle to find quiet areas for focused work," said Studio Other.

The brand's table is designed to remove this issue and instead ensure a flexible environment that can quickly change on demand.

The Studio Other team began by conceiving a full-scale cardboard mockup of the table, which they presented to their client.

This process allowed the client to work closely with Studio Other and provide real-time feedback before the studio invested in fabricating the final product.

"This mockup method not only saved time and cost but also offered the client a tangible way to assess how the design would perform in their own office environment," explained Studio Other.

Once the client was satisfied with the mockup, the table was engineered by industrial specialist Jason Betty and the team. The furniture is now being prototyped at the studio's Downtown Los Angeles showroom.

According to Studio Other, the convertible table has received positive feedback from their client for not only optimising office space but also enhancing overall workflow.

The studio team said that the hands-on design process for the convertible table is typical of how the brand works.

"We're always here to help our clients visualise their ideas and bring them to life," explained Studio Other president Charlotte Wiederholt, who said that the brand has served hundreds of clients over the last 25 years, from creative to financial sectors.

"Whether it's through a hand sketch or Solidworks engineering drawings, and even Pinterest boards, we make sure that no detail is overlooked," she continued. "The flexibility and personalised service that Studio Other offers have become a core element of their success," added the president.

SAA Interiors + Architecture director Chari Jalali highlighted the success of working with hands-on cardboard mockups.

"It's sustainable, cost-effective, and so much fun," Jalali reflected. "This process allows you to be very sure of what you want and what you're going to get."
