Italian studio NM3 has created a pared-back store interior for fashion brand Miss Sixty in Milan, which juxtaposes gleaming steel and bright yellow hues with nude tones and amber glass screens.

NM3 designed the store, located in a 19th-century building at Piazza Liberty in central Milan, to have a clean, minimalist interior.

The studio used a monochromatic colour palette for the ground floor of the two-storey shop, which will be Miss Sixty's main retail space.

Here, it combined sand-coloured concrete and pale travertine with screens in amber glass and perforated metal, slotted in between classical pillars.

"We wanted to use soft, neutral colours on the ground floor, such as sand, skin tones, and travertine," NM3 chief creative officer Francesco Zorzi told Dezeen.

While the ground-floor space has mostly neutral hues and tactile details such as beige curtains, these have been contrasted by steel and mirror fittings and a bright yellow wall that marks the store's changing room area.

The colour is a nod to the downstairs space, which customers reach by walking down a travertine staircase.

NM3 drenched this basement room, which will be used to host events, in colour with a yellow resin floor.

The vibrant hue, which is Miss Sixty's brand colour, is juxtaposed with "a neutral grey coloured textured plaster that works as a backdrop for any kind of event or activation," Zorzi explained.

Lighting also played a large part in the design of the shop.

On the ground floor, square metal lights are suspended from the ceiling in a grid system, while another custom-made gridded lighting design was used for the basement.

"The lighting system is a fully customised design created by NM3 with Silvia Guerrini specifically for the store," Zorzi said.

"It features dimmable LED light sources, a steel frame, and U Glass, a unique feature that sets this product apart, as U Glass is normally used for building facades rather than products," he continued.

"In the basement, in order to have the same layout as the lights on the ground floor, we designed a suspended steel grid that allows the lighting system to be freely positioned despite the extremely large systems present on the ceilings."

The studio also created a number of custom-made steel furniture pieces for the shop, in line with its usual process.

"In all our projects, we work exclusively with raw materials," Zorzi said.

"We want to avoid glueing or welding at all costs, so all steel is laser cut and dry assembled, as are the other materials that characterise the project, such as amber glass, travertine and felt."

NM3 has previously designed the interior for Milan's Galleria Montegani art gallery and created a DJ console for design platform Alcova's pop-up bar during Milan design week.
