Architecture studio Stantec has designed a "retro-futuristic" diner in Los Angeles for car company Tesla with meals served in Cybertruck packaging and parking reserved for electric vehicles only.
Located in West Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard, the Tesla Diner has been in the works since 2018 according to reports, with Eric Greenspan announced as head chef for the restaurant in March.
The two-storey building is "a supercharging station, classic American diner and drive-in experience" according to Tesla and is composed of two tiers of metallic-clad, rounded volumes separated by a band of red LED lighting.
"It offers visitors a classic American diner experience with a retro-futuristic twist," said the brand.
Tucked into the front-most corner of the lot, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are distributed around the diner and two 66-foot (20-metre) LED screens border the parking lot on either side.
Diners can order food inside, or order dine-in from their vehicle when charging.
While eating, visitors can watch "movies, content and special features" on the outdoor screens from inside their vehicles, or tune-in from the restaurant's second-storey outdoor pavilion, the Skypad.
A video was released to showcase the diner
Meals, such as burgers and a chicken and waffle sandwhich, are served inside small cardboard boxes with a Cybertruck-shaped lid.
Inside the diner's lower-level, grey-cushioned seating borders the rounded exterior wall and sits across from a matching grey bar and ordering counter.
Tiered, illuminated soffits run along the length of the ceiling above the dining area, and a rounded panel of textured, blue lighting sits above the bar.
The second-level Skypad is accessed via an entryway located at the end of the long counter, where visitors walk up a rounded staircase lined with Tesla Optimum robots.
The upper level mirrors the first, with white modern bar tables and seating lining a glass railing, and a counter hugging the centre of the space.
Visitors can also purchase merchandise on this level, including clothing and a mini humanoid robot figure.
According to Tesla, the diner is the "largest urban supercharging station in the world", which is powered partially by solar panels.
"Solar canopies offer shade to the west charging lot, helping to reduce the site's carbon emissions by about 26.6 million pounds of CO2 per year – making charging even more sustainable," said the brand.
The opening was announced via an X post on 24 July. Local news outlet KTLA reported that protesters lined up to object Tesla founder Elon Musk's involvement with president Donald Trump's administration, while a local resident reported "insane" traffic in the area.
The company released its Cybertruck model in 2023 and recently dispatched a fleet of driverless robotaxis for the first time in Austin, Texas.
