Italian studio NM3 has used a selection of its steel furniture to create an interior that was "left raw" for art gallery Galleria Montegani in Milan, Italy.

Known for its stainless-steel furniture, NM3's designs have previously been used in projects including design platform Alcova's first pop-up bar during this year's Milan design week, for which it created a DJ console.

At the new Galleria Montegani space, located in the south of the city, the studio worked with interior designer Numero 10 Architetti to provide the furniture.

It combined pieces from past collections with bespoke designs.

"The tables are custom-made in a specific size that only Our Legacy before and Galleria Montegani after asked for their spaces," NM3 chief creative officer Francesco Zorzi told Dezeen. "Other objects are both from our catalogue and from our archive.

"The founders of the Galleria Montegani are close friends, so we are happy to have unique prototypes and even pieces from past collections that are no longer in production in their space."

Among the pieces that NM3 provided for the gallery are stainless-steel desks, which can be used as workdesks but can also be combined to create longer tables for events.

During Milan design week, the gallery hosted a dinner with London fashion retailer LN-CC, which saw the pieces used as dining tables. NM3 also added stainless-steel floral planters and low sofas to the space, as well as an all-steel DJ desk.

The design for the space was about "economy and reduction", Zorzi said.

"The space is left raw, it's somehow a space that is left like at the stage before delivering a construction site," he added.

NM3 rarely works in any material other than steel, which the trio is fascinated by because of its ties to modernist design.

"Steel is a material that resonates with classic modernism – think of Mies, Eiermann, Fritz Haller, and many others, a period in the history of modern and contemporary architecture that particularly interests us," Zorzi explained.

"We work with a single material because we are interested in having a very short production chain, in order to optimise emissions and costs arising from the production process," he added.

"We also want our furniture to behave like historical architecture, lasting for generations upon generations. It is a way of working that we call 'low-tech sustainability' and one in which we strongly believe."

Stainless steel has proven a popular material in furniture design in recent years, with projects including a Parisian coffee shop filled with silo-style steel seating.

We first drew attention to the trend at last year's Milan design week, when we rounded up steely mono-material metal furniture launches.
