Statement:
"The annual Interior Educators National Student Awards celebrate the creative, thoughtful and exciting work of students from interior design and interior architecture courses from across the UK and Ireland.
"The winning projects showcase a diversity of approaches for the design and interpretation of interiors across seven categories.
"The projects engage with the challenges facing us today and speculate how thoughtful design can create a better, more sustainable future for all.
"Interior Educators (IE) is a powerful network for more than 50 institutional members; a forum in which the exchange of ideas and experience contributes to the evolution of academic practice informing the design of interior space.
"The 2025 Interior Educators National Student Awards are generously sponsored by MillerKnoll and the Royal College of Art."
The Closey by Josie Schaeli
"Women's health and wellbeing has historically faced stigma and limited research, resulting in a general lack of understanding that persists today.
"It is vital to provide a safe and empowering environment that can take steps to address this issue.
"Located within West Ward Works, a former jute spinning mill and print works, The Closey aims to create such a space.
"It takes influence from the industrial past of Dundee, and embodies the strength, empowerment and strong sense of community from the women of this time."

Re:Discover(Y) by Jenni Houldsworth
"Set in 2085, this project imagines a future where advancements in generative AI and quantum computing have evolved into 'quantum AI', leading to groundbreaking discoveries and an influx of data we struggle to comprehend.
"This caused society to deeply question the value of their contributions to science, and in light of this, the Department of Human Remembrance created project Re:discover(Y).
"Functioning as a data centre to study quantum AI, a public lecture theatre and archival space, it is a place to reconnect to the curiosity for discovery, celebrate scientific achievements and remember why authentic human contribution to science is important."
Student: Jenni Houldsworth
Course: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and Design
School: Nottingham Trent University
Award: Interior Futures 2025 Winner (Completing Student)
Re-Collection by Elissa Lee
"Inspired by the idiosyncrasies of inherited objects, Re-Collection is a table and set of chairs showcasing themes of materiality, re-use and memory.
"A series of 'object biographies' revealed unique qualities of objects and inspired a series of sculptural and structural studies.
"To craft the final outcomes, techniques including wood turning, steam bending, marquetry and planing were used along with laser engraving of leather and hand stitching.
"The restoration and re-use of existing furniture was carefully executed to extend material life cycles."
Student: Elissa Lee
Course: BDes(Hons) Interior and Environmental Design
School: Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee
Award: Craft and Making 2024 Winner (Completing Student)
Practices of Reuse/Lost Community by Interior Architecture Year Three Cohort
"In year three of studying Interior Architecture at Middlesex University London, students focus on reuse, sustainability and community-driven design.
"Through live projects and collaboration with clients and professionals, they develop innovative spatial strategies that support civic life and promote social cohesion.
"In autumn 2024, final year students partnered with Father Paschal Worton and St Mary's Church, Somers Town, to envision its future amidst financial challenges.
"Tasked with blending worship with wider community use, students proposed sensitive spatial transformations.
"Through surveys, documentation and site visits, they identified three key themes: ephemeral (inspirational moments), physical (material experience) and political (community voices), shaping meaningful, respectful and context-aware architectural responses."
Student: Interior Architecture Year Three Cohort
Course: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture
School: Middlesex University London
Award: Collaborative Practice 2025 Winner (Completing Student)
Archive of Imperfection by Ellie Goldsack
"Set in 2085, this project reimagines Papplewick Pumping Station as a base of resistance within a future society governed by AI and a strict 'perfection score'.
"Exiles rejected by the system reclaim the derelict industrial site to preserve banned books, tools and forgotten knowledge – resisting the AI's sanitised version of history.
"Rooted in the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, the design embraces imperfection and decay as sources of meaning and identity.
"The spatial sequence includes paper-making, tool-forging and communal workshops, culminating in a bookbinding ritual that marks entry into the growing archive."
Student: Ellie Goldsack
Course: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and Design
School: Nottingham Trent University
Award: Creative Re-Use 2025 (Completing Student)
Unconcious Identities: How is Lina Bo Bardi's Casa de Vidro an allegory for the decolonisation of Brazil? by Anna Chipperfield
"Lina Bo Bardi, an Italian-born architect, moved to Brazil in 1947 with her husband, Pietro Maria Bardi.
"Her first Brazilian project, Casa de Vidro, became their lifelong home and now houses their art collection under the Instituto Bardi. The house blends European Modernism with Brazilian vernacular styles, symbolising Brazil's post-colonial identity.
"This dissertation explores Casa de Vidro as an allegory of Brazil's 20th-century social and political shifts, examining its design, historical context and the Bardis' collection.
"It argues that the house transcends modernist ideals, evolving into a politically conscious, culturally hybrid symbol of national transformation."
Student: Anna Chipperfield

School: Oxford Brookes University
Award: Writing 2025 (Completing Student)
The Working Terrace by Delta Freeman
"The proposed design of the existing building, 40 Harold Mount in Leeds, is to convert it from a residential house into a social bakery, workspace and private living area for a working-class couple.
"The bakery will be open daily serving the working locals of Leeds and providing a space for students and young professionals to 'work from home'.
"This proposed bakery will also host educational baking workshops, where the community can come together, socialise and make new connections."
Student: Delta Freeman
Course: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture
School: Leeds Beckett University

Still Water Circle by Yi Xuan Lim
"London's escalating rental market has led to a significant shift towards alternative living arrangements.
"In the 12 months leading up to November 2024, rents surged by 11.6 per cent, marking the fastest annual increase since records began in 2006. This sharp rise has made traditional housing increasingly unaffordable for many residents.
"Estimates suggest that approximately 10,000 people now reside on London's waterways, a figure that has roughly doubled since 2012.
"The barge existing community, while resilient and self-sufficient, often faces challenges related to social isolation, lack of communal gathering spaces and limited access to shared resources."
Student: Yi Xuan Lim
Course: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture
School: Middlesex University London
Award: Interior Futures 2025 (Progressing Student)
Cork: A Circular Exhibition by Sue Liu
"The project began with the design of an oversailing joint, inspired by the work of Dutch designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, which was developed as a piece of architectural language to create a display unit.
"This concept was then expanded through iterative process into a large-scale exhibition system, designed to present the process of making sustainable cork panels.
"Our site for this project was the Stirling Prize – winning Town House building in south-west London.
"Working as part of a group, we carefully modelled an area around one of the building's entrances, aiming to adapt our design to the site by understanding how users transition through its approach and threshold."
Student: Sue Liu
Course: BA(Hons) Interior Design
School: Kingston University London
Award: Craft and Making 2025 (Progressing Student)
The Courtyard Hostel+ by Lui Ann Dam
"Once the beating heart of the neighbourhood, The Old Savoy has long been a place where people came together to share a singular passion, the movies.
"Built in the 1890s, this historic venue served as a vibrant hub of social connection and artistic expression.
"More than just a building, it was a gathering place where stories came to life and friendships were formed in the flickering glow of the screen.
"This proposal envisions a thoughtful restoration of the Old Savoy, to reimagine it as a vibrant hostel that not only provides comfortable accommodation for all but also a dynamic cultural space for a new generation.
"A place where collaboration, conversation and creativity can once again flourish."
Student: Lui Ann Dam
Course: BA(Hons) Interior Design
School: Atlantic Technological University Sligo
Award: Creative Re-Use 2025 (Progressing Student)
The Plant Lab by Daria Baginska
"The Plant Lab is a forward-thinking educational initiative situated within a greenhouse environment, designed to promote awareness of nutrition, sustainability and personal wellbeing.
"Through structured volunteer programmes and hands-on workshops, participants gain practical skills in cultivating fruits and vegetables.
"The space serves not only as a hub for environmental education but also as a platform to reconnect with nature, experience fresh organic produce and inspire lasting engagement in sustainable practices and urban agriculture.
"In direct response to the climate emergency, The Plant Lab empowers individuals and communities to adopt low-impact, climate-conscious lifestyles.
"By encouraging local food production, it reduces dependency on industrial agriculture and long supply chains, thereby helping to lower the overall carbon footprint."
Student: Daria Baginska
