Dutch studio MVRDV has unveiled designs for a marble-clad residential tower in Taipei, Taiwan, that will be covered in protruding volumes.
Named Out of the Box, the high-rise will have a gridded facade defined by cantilevered terraces at each level that overlook the city in all directions.
The tower, which will rise 25-storeys above a major road, was designed by MVRDV for Win Sing Development Company to become a "landmark of the neighbourhood".
"Considering this building's location and its low-rise neighbours, we knew that this would be a building for viewing – something to see, and something to see from," said MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas.
"The boxes popping out from the building signify this quality. They literally reach out into the surroundings, providing ideal lookout platforms to see the mountains and the city," Maas continued.
"From the street, they form distinctive, eye-catching features for passers-by."
At ground level, the studio will redesign an existing retail area, which will include a low-rise building outlined by a similarly gridded structure.
According to the studio, the street's existing vendors will be given retail spaces on the building's ground floor.
Beyond its marble exterior, the tower will contain 93 apartments ranging from 105- to 140-square-metres organised a central circulation core.
According to the studio, the layout of the apartments were determined by daylight access – leading to a variously-arranged interiors that give each flat an "individual character".
"The size and placement of the boxes was determined via digital scripting, which processed considerations such as sun exposure to give the building its playful shape," said the studio.
"In this way, the design was able to fulfil the requirements of the brief and respect the limits of the local building code while going 'outside the box' to give every one of the building's 93 apartments a unique floorplan."
Alongside the apartment balconies, additional outdoor spaces for residents will include a swimming pool and small park at ground level, and a communal roof terrace.
If completed, Out of the Box tower will be MVRDV's first housing project in Taiwan. Also in Taiwan, the studio has unveiled its design for a stacked marketplace in Zhubei.
Elsewhere, it has revealed plans to transform a vacant church into a swimming pool in the Netherlands.
