Chinese electronics company Honor has regained its lead in the ongoing race to create the thinnest possible folding phone with the release of its 8.8-millimetre-thick Magic V5.
Set to launch in Europe at the end of August, Honor billed the device as the "world's thinnest foldable smartphone", dethroning Oppo's Find N5 by a literal hair's breadth of 0.1 millimetres.
The Magic V5 is even thinner when unfolded, revealing a 4.1-millimetre-thick 7.95-inch OLED screen with an "industry-leading" peak brightness of 5,000 nits for improved image quality and outdoor visibility.
However, the phone's record-breaking skinniness only applies to its Ivory White colourway and does not count the thickness added by its camera, as reported by The Verge's Dominic Preston.
In fact, the camera bump is almost as thick as the phone itself and protrudes beyond that of the Oppo Find N5. It houses three lenses: a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto alongside 50-megapixel wide and ultra-wide angle lenses.
Magic V5's ratings for protection against dust and water ingress rival those of a non-foldable phone, Honor claims.
Its system runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, although more specific details about the phone's software have so far been kept under wraps.
Magic V5 marks the second time that Honor has created the world's thinnest foldable, following the 9.2-millimetre Magic V3 from 2024, which was last year usurped by the Find N5.
Samsung is set to unveil the seventh generation of its Galaxy Z Fold phone tomorrow, which is expected to be the same thickness as the Oppo Find N5 while also being the lightest foldable phone of its kind at 216 grams.
Other smartphone makers that are pushing the boundaries of what a folding phone can be include Infinix, which earlier this year unveiled its credit card-sized Zero Mini, and Honor's former parent company Huawei with its triple-foldable Mate XT.
