Four schools and universities that include Dezeen Showroom seating

Dezeen Showroom In Situ: the third edition of our In Situ series explores schools and universities from around the world where Dezeen Showroom products seat students and faculty members.
Recent years have seen educational institutions become an increasingly popular project type for design firms, and the selection of furniture within these institutions must be both aesthetically appealing and durable enough to withstand rigorous daily use.
Australian furniture brands Derlot and Design By Them are joined by Scandinavian brands Fora Form and Blå Station in this iteration of the series, which revolves around real-world case studies of interiors that include pieces we have published on our furniture directory.
Ranging from high schools to universities, the following selection of projects spans Sweden, Norway and Australia, and includes traditional chairs as well as modular seating systems.
Read on to read more about real-life interiors where Dezeen Showroom products have been specified.

Twill chair by Design By Them in Pembroke Middle School John Moody Centre, Australia
The soft, malleable properties of plasticine are referenced in the legs and backrest of this wooden chair by Australian design studio Gibson Karlo for furniture brand Design By Them.
As well as its craft-related origins, the Twill chair's durability and overall playfulness made it an appropriate choice for use in dining areas of Pembroke Middle School in Adelaide, designed by local practice Studio Gram.
Cool-toned grey-blue versions of the chair seat pupils, in contrast with the rest of the warm-toned scheme, which includes wood, brick and red accents.
"The chairs were selected for the Pembroke Middle School John Moody Centre for their ability to balance institutional requirements with a design-led approach – their robust timber construction ensures durability in a high-use environment while maintaining a warm, domestic feel that aligns with the client's vision," project architect René Majewski told Dezeen.
"The neutral yet refined colour palette integrates seamlessly with the broader interior scheme, supporting a calm and welcoming atmosphere – additionally, the chairs offer great value at scale, meeting a maintenance-conscious standard without compromising on aesthetic quality."

Homework seating collection by Derlot in the University of Sunshine Coast, Australia
Australian architecture practice Hassell specified this seating system by furniture brand Derlot when creating the Moreton Bay campus of the University of the Sunshine Coast in Brisbane.
The Homework seating collection comprises a cohesive series of seating and tables that facilitate breakout zones, casual meetings and informal work, including high- and low-back benches and single seats.
In an atrium – known as the Rise – orange-red upholstered versions of the system are situated on tiers of a bleachers-style steps.
"The Homework collection was specified to create a modern, collaborative space," Derlot director and designer Alexander Lotersztain told Dezeen. "The system helps create a space that reflects the university's values of supporting all communities through equitable learning."

Bud chair by Fora Form in Molde University College, Norway
An interior in Molde University College, Norway, features Bud chair by Scandinavian brand Fora Form. The chair has a tubular backrest bent into a semicircle and comes in various colours and base options.
Nestled between house-shaped meeting rooms, the chairs are present with yellow, four-legged bases as well as sage green swivel bases, creating opportunities for collaboration and socialising.
Bud was selected by Norwegian firm IARK AS for its cheerful, dynamic silhouette, as well as its lightweight yet robust frame.
"We searched to find a chair with a balance of flexibility, comfort and a playful expression – the bud chair was selected for its soft seating with the possibility of different bases," interior architect at IARK AS Benedicte Andreassen Skelsey told Dezeen.
"It adapts seamlessly to a variety of room configurations and functional needs, while its lightweight frame makes it easy to move wherever it is needed. As a lounge chair with a contemporary edge, Bud fosters an informal yet vibrant atmosphere – all while standing up to the demands of an active and dynamic learning environment."

RUT seating system by Blå Station in Forum Medicum, Sweden
The lofty entry lobby of this medical faculty building in Lund, Sweden, is home to a variety of seating by Swedish furniture brand Blå Station, including the RUT seating system.
Upholstered in an earthy brown material, the modular sofa has a sprawling appearance – some areas have backrests, allowing users to sit back-to-back, and small rectangular tables spring up from between seat cushions.
The system aims to facilitate comfortable waiting, breaks and casual, on-the-go work for the 4,000 staff members, students and researchers that use the building, which was designed by architecture practice Henning Larsen.
"Forum Medicum is one of Lund University's most important meeting places, an environment designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and new ideas – the atrium serves both as an entrance and a gathering space, and here we wanted to create an atmosphere that feels welcoming and inclusive," said interior design project manager Maya Robert.
"When choosing furniture for this central location, the choice fell on RUT – a sofa that shares the same natural ease and generosity as the building itself: with its open form, it invites people from every direction and creates the conditions for meetings and community."
