Busta Studio evokes the elegance of New York townhouses for Kimpton Ashbel hotel
Interior design practice Busta Studio has filled the Kimpton Ashbel hotel on Park Avenue with art and objects intended to make it feel like "a warm, elegantly curated home".
Located in a 1928 beaux-arts building on New York City's famous Park Avenue, Kimpton Ashbel was designed to feel like a private residence.
"Park Avenue is one of New York City's most iconic streets, instantly evoking the elegance of its heritage townhouses," Busta Studio founder Anna Busta told Dezeen.
"Drawing from this distinctive spirit, we envisioned a conceptual townhouse experience – welcoming guests into a warm, elegantly curated home."
Anna and her husband Jonathan Busta, who run Busta Studio together, used hand-brushed blonde limed oak panelling and arches juxtaposed with Bianco Dolomiti and Pietra marbles to create the right feel for the interior.
The studio also combined hand-cast bronze, glass, inlaid bronze and hand-cut mosaic stone with white plaster ceilings and mouldings for a deliberately simple yet elegant look.
"The New York townhouse concept itself is an endless source of inspiration: a place where one lingers, surrounded by bespoke millwork, refined finishes, stylish furnishings, and a curated mix of art and collected objects that feel personal and storied," Jonathan Busta told Dezeen.
To create privacy from the bustle of Park Avenue, custom louvres were added at street level.
Guests are welcomed by a custom inlaid mosaic featuring the hotel's KA initials when entering the lobby, which Busta Studio filled with specially commissioned artworks and decorative objects.
"We curated the art collection to create a nice, easy vibe for the interior, with a mixture of graphics, original paintings, photography and sculpture," Anna Busta said.
"All pieces are specifically commissioned for the space, and the overall collection has a simple but sophisticated guiding aesthetic," she continued. "We didn't want to provoke with art, but instead we simply embraced beauty."
The designers wanted to tie the communal spaces and guestrooms at Kimpton Ashbel together by using a coherent colour palette for the hotel, which focuses on calming neutral hues juxtaposed with jewel colours.
"Jewel tones inject vibrancy into accent pieces like arch chairs, side stools, headboards, and art chairs, striking a harmonious balance between subtle and bold statements that add warmth and approachability to the space," Jonathan Busta said.
To create a homely feeling, Busta Studio used velvets, linens, naturally tanned leathers and boucle fabrics.
The studio said it hoped that the mix of tactile materials, refined finishes and well-considered artworks would create a feeling that is reminiscent of a well-designed home.
"We believe the guest experience is enhanced by this intimate approach," Anna Busta concluded.
