Promotion: this year's Brick in Architecture Awards has opened for submissions, inviting projects that showcase "the most incredible and sustainable ways to design with clay brick".
Organised by the American trade association, The Brick Industry Association (BIA), the Brick in Architecture Awards is an annual competition that promotes and recognises innovative applications of clay brick as a primary building material.
Any brick-based project can be submitted to the contest if it was completed after 1 January 2019.
"Any work of architecture completed since 1 January 2019, in which new clay brick products comprise over 50 per cent of the predominant exterior building or paving material, is eligible," explained the BIA.
"These include new clay face or hollow brick, building brick, thin brick, paving brick, glazed brick, structural glazed facing tile, brick products in special shapes and/or a combination of any of these aforementioned units."
The awards programme features nine categories: commercial, education – K-12, higher education – colleges and universities, residential – single family, residential – multi-family, thin brick, paving and landscape projects, historic renovation and international, which includes projects outside of the US, Canada or a US territory.
Within these categories, architects and designers employed by an architectural, design-build or landscaping design firm can compete to win the Best in Class and Gold, Silver or Bronze prizes.
The 2025 Brick in Architecture Awards also includes an overall Craftsmanship Award, created to recognise an individual mason or team displaying a particular aptitude for installing brick artfully and uniquely.
As well as architects and designers, manufacturers and distributors are eligible to enter projects where they have played a part on behalf of the architect.
The BIA explained that any member of a design team can serve as the submitting architect and that credit must be given to every team member who substantially contributed to the project's design.
Entrants are allowed to submit more than one project. Each category will be judged independently, and each submission will be assessed independently, while the size and location of each project will not impact its winning potential.
"The Brick in Architecture Awards competition features the most incredible and sustainable ways to design with clay brick," said the BIA.
Previous winning projects include the Beikun Garden within the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Minhang Campus in China and the James Lawson High School in Nashville, Tennessee.
Entires must be submitted by 29 August, and a jury of peers will choose a winner in October to be announced in November.
The winning projects will be honoured at the inaugural Brick Excellence Gala, hosted at the Hyatt Regency Orlando on 9 April 2026.
"This prestigious event will bring together top architects, designers, and masonry professionals from across the country," said the organisation. "Winning teams will be formally recognised and presented with their awards on stage in front of industry peers—a moment not to be missed."
"This is your chance to earn national recognition and celebrate your achievement in style."
