Dezeen Showroom: Spanish manufacturer Isist Atelier is reissuing the iconic BKF chair by Antoni Bonet, Juan Kurchan and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy, focusing on original details and proportions.
The BKF chair, also known as the Butterfly chair, was designed in 1938 and has gone on to become a classic of 20th-century design, featuring in MoMA's permanent collection and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house.
Its form is instantly recognisable, featuring a crisscrossing tubular steel frame that supports a slung leather seat, recalling the look of military campaign furniture but remaining firmly rooted in modernism.
Unlicensed copies and licensed reproductions have been produced over the course of the past 86 years since its initial release, but Isist Atelier remarks that these rarely preserve the chair's original proportions or artisanal integrity.
The manufacturer has now acquired the licence to produce the BKF chair from the Bonet Estate and has worked closely with it to recreate every detail of the original design.
The chairs are handcrafted by Isist Atelier in Spain, with users able to select from vegetable-tanned leather or cotton canvas for the material of the seat.
