Apple unveils "impossibly thin" iPhone Air

Technology brand Apple has unveiled the iPhone Air, which at 5.6 millimetres thick is the thinnest iPhone ever made by the company.

Described by Apple CEO Tim Cook as the "biggest step ever with iPhone", the phone was unveiled today at an event at Apple Park.

Named iPhone Air, it is a new line of phones added to the iPhone range. According to Apple it is "an impossibly thin and light design that is more durable than any previous model phone".

The phone is 5.6 millimetres thick, which according to Apple was made possible through redesigning the internal processors, battery and camera.

According to Apple the phone is the "most power-efficient iPhone ever made". It uses the high-performance A19 Pro, N1, and C1X chips.

"The all-new iPhone Air is so powerful, yet impossibly thin and light, that you really have to hold it to believe it's real," said Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus.

"This huge leap in design and engineering is only made possible through Apple innovation, especially Apple silicon," Ternus continued.

"iPhone Air is a brand-new member of the iPhone family that delivers advanced features our users will love, like pro performance, a versatile 48MP Fusion camera system, our innovative Center Stage front camera, and great all-day battery life – all in a breakthrough design that feels like you’re holding the future."

The phone has a 6.5-inch screen with a titanium frame and glass including a ceramic shield on both the front and back. It weighs 165 grams.

The raised plateaux on the rear creates more space for the battery and the phone has no space for a SIM card to maximise internal space.

The phone has a single lens described by Apple as a Fusion camera that "gives users the equivalent of four lenses in their pocket".

The 48 megapixel camera is complemented with a front facing camera that was released across the iPhone range that allows for landscape selfies while holding the camera vertical.

Earlier this year Apple revealed its "broadest software design update ever", which features translucent buttons and controls redesigned using its Liquid Glass design, expanded AI capabilities and a gaming app.
