WiChair by Alina Schnizler for Wilkhahn

Dezeen Showroom: designer Alina Schnizler has created the WiChair task chair for German brand Wilkhahn, combining springy steel and plywood in a fun and functional frame.
Wilkhahn describes the WiChair as a future-proof seating solution that harmonises material responsibility, timeless design and innovative functionality.

The design is based around a curved torsion-elastic steel bracket and gently moulded FSC-certified plywood seat and backrest, which allow the body to move naturally forwards, backwards and sideways throughout the day.
A palette of five painted steel colours helps make the S-curve of the bracket into a visual feature.
This is enhanced by a weight adjustment mechanism beneath the seat, which alters the responsiveness of the chair's flex via a knob and chunky spring.

Schnizler designed the WiChair to be as easy to repair and recycle as possible, minimising the number of components to 34 and ensuring all materials can be separated. Plastic is avoided outside of the optional foam cushioning.
"From the design phase and choice of materials to production, the objective was to use resources efficiently, embrace a circular economy and create lasting quality," said Wilkhahn. "Understated until you sit, the WiChair is inspired by yesterday's world, and made for tomorrow's."
