Vauxhall unveils "sharper, cleaner" griffin logo

British carmaker Vauxhall has updated its griffin emblem, which has been pared back and lost its flag for the first time.
The logo is the 13th iteration of the brand's logo, which has incorporated a griffin since 1915.
In the latest update, Vauxhall's previous flat logo introduced in 2020 was further simplified, with the griffin made more angular. In particular, the mythical creature's neck hair was simplified while its beak was closed.
For the first time in the logo's 121-year history, the flag depicting the letter V no longer forms part of the logo.

"The griffin emblem is instantly recognisable, with Vauxhalls seen on almost every street in Britain," said Vauxhall design vice-president Mark Adams.
"Having adorned our vehicles in different forms for more than 120 years, we wanted to retain its essential elements while streamlining it for the next generation of electrified vehicles."

The revamped logo will be presented next month at the Paris Motor Show on the Vauxhall STX Concept. It will then be used on all future production models.
According to Vauxhall, the simplified logo was designed to be illuminated on its future electric vehicles.
"As the griffin is now illuminated on the front of our latest models, this simpler design also makes it clearer and easier to identify," said Adams.
"The new look is sharper, cleaner and fits perfectly with the next evolution of our bold and pure design language."

The original griffin logo, designed by an apprentice at the company Harry Varley, was the winner of a competition to create a badge for the emerging car brand in 1915.
Varley incorporated the mythical creature into the logo as a nod to the coat of arms of Sir Falkes de Bréauté, who in the 13th century became the owner of the land in London now known as Vauxhall. This is where the car company, which began as the Vauxhall Ironworks, was first established.

Other car companies that have recently updated their logos include Bentley, which revealed the "biggest change" to its logo in its 100-year history last year.
