Dezeen Showroom: Thai design practice Thinkk Studio aided a struggling Bangkok-based metalwork factory by collaborating on the design and manufacturing of a chair made from perforated steel.
The Stamping chair has a slender, colourful appearance that Thinkk Studio developed in partnership with a local factory, which is focused on the production of small steel machinery components.
"Faced with increasing pressure from cheaper imports, the factory sought new opportunities," said Thinkk Studio. "We proposed a simple yet radical idea: to use their existing machines to produce a full-scale furniture piece."
The result was a corrugated pattern for the perforated steel sheeting, which, according to the studio, increases the design's structural strength without adding material.
The Stamping chair has a contemporary minimalist aesthetic with an industrial edge and is available in seven different colours.
Thinkk Studio says its lightweight and stackable nature makes it good for busy environments like cafes and co-working spaces, and that it can be repaired, repainted or have cushions added to it to extend its lifespan.
"More than just a product, Stamping chair demonstrates how design can open new paths for struggling manufacturers," said Thinkk Studio. "It reflects the potential to transform limitations into assets, reviving existing tools and knowledge into new, market-ready forms."
