Dezeen can exclusively reveal a sneak peek of the British architect Peter Cook's Play Pavilion, which is nearing completion alongside this year's Serpentine Pavilion in London.

Set to open to the public next week, the bright orange Play Pavilion is being built in collaboration with Danish toymaker Lego to encourage a younger audience to engage with the Serpentine Gallery's programming.

Currently surrounded by hoarding, the structure sits next door to this year's main Serpentine Pavilion, designed by Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum.

The photos show the form of the largely complete Play Pavilion, which is topped with a geodesic dome roof and incorporates Lego into its walls. It will open on 11 June to coincide with World Play Day.

Along with the Lego elements, the pavilion incorporates a slide and crawling holes to encourage children to play.

"The Play Pavilion tantalises by being bright, curvaceous and strange, and on closer inspection, the acrylic skin of the enclosure erupts into delightful and inventive murals that burst out into Lego brick-built elements," Cook told Dezeen when the design was unveiled in April.

"Entering the Play Pavilion, mysterious stalagmite-like masts reveal the intricacy and creative potential of the space," he continued.

"Then you see walls with long runs of Lego baseplates, with visitors invited to play and create."

The pavilion was designed by Cook, who is best known for co-founding avant-garde architecture group Archigram in the 1960s alongside Warren Chalk, Dennis Crompton, David Greene, Ron Herron and Michael Webb.

Cook is one of the architects connected to The Line – a controversial megacity in Saudi Arabia that began construction earlier this year.

The Play Pavilion and the Tabassum-deisgned main pavilion were built to mark the 25th anniversary of the first Serpentine Pavilion, which was designed by Zaha Hadid.

Last year, architect Minsuk Cho created a star-shaped shelter for the event, while Lina Ghotmeh imagined the 2023 Serpentine Pavilion as "an invitation to dwell together".

The photography is by Tom Ravenscroft.
