Dezeen Showroom: Danish furniture brand +Halle and designer Boris Berlin used heat-shrunk textile rather than conventional foam to upholster this metal-framed lounge chair.
Shrinx was created as "both a protest and a venture into a new category of upholstery for the future" according to +Halle, who working with German textile brand Krall+Roth to realise the seat.
"We have seen woven fabrics as a sustainable alternative to foam in the office chair category before, where you typically stretch a small back and seat area," said +Halle CEO Martin Halle. "However, bringing this technology to something as large as an easy chair changes the game."
Rather than being stretched around the frame, the Shrinx chair's textile is draped around it and then shrunk, which the brand says allows it to reshape.
Berlin referenced the shape of a club chair in the seat's form, creating lightness and translucency in playful contrast with the usual heaviness of armchairs.
The design means the chair is easy to move and transport, says Berlin, and its resulting translucency makes it a less bulky choice for seating in public interiors.
In addition to Shrinx, here are seven recent examples of seats and sofas that are padded out using alternatives to harmful fossil fuel-based polyurethane foam.
