Scaffold outdoor occasional tables by Haldane
Dezeen Showroom: taking inspiration from Japanese bamboo scaffolding, South African designer Haldane Martin has created outdoor tables made from intersecting stainless steel rods.
Released through his eponymous Cape Town-based brand Haldane, the Scaffold occasional tables feature steel rods welded together at their intersections with the same precise overlaps that give bamboo scaffolding its strength and efficiency.
Practical and durable enough for outdoor living spaces, the tables are based on a system of repeatable square modules, allowing either low coffee tables or high side tables of various sizes to be created from the same base units.
The Haldane brand describes the tables as combining brutal rationality and Japanese refinement, with the attention to detail visible in areas such as the rounded edges on the protruding rods, which stop clothes from catching.
"Visually, Scaffold tables are as sculptural as they are practical: floating rational rectangles in varied heights and sizes," said the Haldane brand.
"Both the structural elements and the tabletop surface are made from the repetition of identical rods that allow light to traverse the negative space with a transient fluid quality while bouncing off the pure geometry of the stainless-steel forms."
