Lualdi develops vision for contemporary interiors based on architectural systems

Promotion: Italian company Lualdi has evolved its architectural door designs from the likes of Piero Lissoni and Kokaistudios to encompass partitioning and panelling systems, bringing sophistication and coherence to interior schemes.
Founded in 1860 as a carpentry shop and known in the 20th century for its interior doors, Lualdi has become increasingly ambitious in the expansiveness of its offerings, creating holistic systems used to organise spaces with elegance and clarity.

"As the boundaries between residential, hospitality and workplace spaces become increasingly blurred, interior architectural design is gradually shifting away from the notion of isolated objects towards integrated systems that coordinate space, functions and user experience," said Lualdi.

In response, the company said it had expanded the traditional concept of the door in recent years to encompass an "ecosystem" of integrated architectural elements.

With this way of thinking, the door becomes continuous with the surrounding structure, both receding into quietness and taking on a heightened grandeur.

"Doors, partitions, panelling and storage units become tools to create continuity, organise spaces and define new relationships between the various functions of the space," said Lualdi.

The flagship product of Lualdi's current era is Framework. Launched in 2025 and based on a design by the company's artistic director Piero Lissoni, Framework treats the wall as "a genuine architectural infrastructure", said Lualdi.

Built on the company's formal research and a new frame technology, Framework allows for the fixing of doors, panels and fronts along with functional accessories such as shelving.

Lualdi describes it as "a new concept of boiserie", referring to the characteristic French wall panelling, with a modern aesthetic and material palette of glass, metal, gloss lacquer, leather and woods.

The modular system allows for the creation of walk-in wardrobes, workspaces and other custom solutions while minimising the need for structural interventions. Lualdi explained it is also easily adapted to complex geometries.

"The result is a design platform that allows architects and interior designers to create rooms using a coherent language of surfaces, openings and functions," said Lualdi.

The Framework offering includes a new 61-millimetre door with an aluminium frame. The accessory options include illuminated shelves, open compartments, drawers and hanging rails, while the finishes include stained woods from bleached oak to fossil black oak and fluted or mesh glass.

A system, which can be used alone or also in combination with Framework, is Shoin, designed by Dante Bonuccelli. Informed by traditional Japanese houses and their sliding shoji paper room dividers, it features glass panels and doors with minimalist aluminium profiles.

Sliding and pivoting designs are available, and different types of glass – including satin-finished fluted designs and mesh-style Retina glass – help to balance openness and privacy while maintaining a flow of light.

Lissoni's L7 and L7 Bi-folding doors have a similar quality, helping to maintain visual continuity and a sense of lightness.

In Koan Light, an evolution of the Koan doors by Shanghai-based Italian designers Kokaistudios, the system combines glass and vertical wooden slats to create lightly drawn boundaries between rooms and give a calming balance between transparency and materiality.

Beyond glass, the Framework system offers the option to integrate stoneware, glass, faux leather or metal, turning partitions into a dynamic 3D surface enlivened with customisable metal inlays.

Lualdi's vision for contemporary interiors can be viewed in its new London showroom on Margaret Street in Fitzrovia, opened in May 2026.

Lualdi conceived the showroom as a workplace and venue for architects, interior designers and developers to exchange ideas, and used its panelling and partitioning systems to create a layout that invites exploration.
