British industrial designer Benjamin Hubert has joined Dezeen Awards 2025 as a judge. Here he picks five key projects that best represent his approach to brand, product and digital design.
As Hubert' design studio Layer celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year, he explained how solving problems was still the core of his design ethos.
"I became a designer because I love solving problems, and at its core, design is creative problem-solving," he told Dezeen.
"It's about examining challenges, identifying frustrations, and reframing them into new opportunities."
According to Hubert, the most important project he has designed to date is Layer itself, which he described as his "biggest risk" after repositioning from the formerly eponymous brand.
A decade after embarking on the venture, Hubert is exhibiting a retrospective of the studio's work from the past 10 years at Milan design week. The exhibition will also feature six objects confronting some of the key issues set to impact humanity over the next 10 years.
Read on to find Hubert's pick of projects that best represent his work:
"This project reflects Layer's commitment to sustainability and the impact of holistic design thinking across an entire product ecosystem.
"Working with Earth Rated, we developed a completely new brand identity, a range of eco-conscious pet products, and packaging, demonstrating that sustainability and thoughtful design can bring joy and playfulness to everyday interactions – even in the most unexpected categories."
Layer monograph, Phaidon, 2022
"Our monograph with Phaidon, written by Dezeen editorial director Max Fraser, was a deeply reflective project – an opportunity to reflect on what we had accomplished so far while charting the future of the studio.
"The book explores our evolution as a studio, our core design philosophy, and the diverse range of projects that have shaped our practice. It was an insightful process that reaffirmed our mission: to push the boundaries of design, innovation and human experience."
Beosound Balance and Beosound Emerge for Bang & Olufsen, 2020 and 2021
"This project was a defining moment for Layer, showcasing our ability to merge cutting-edge technology with craftsmanship to create more human, intuitive products."
"With Bang & Olufsen, we reimagined high-performance audio products as sculptural objects, seamlessly blending advanced acoustics with warm, tactile materials to enhance their presence in the home."

"Go is a conceptual project that rethinks the wheelchair experience, guided by Nike's belief that 'everybody is an athlete'.
"Designed as a tailor-made, performance-driven mobility solution, it challenges traditional notions of assistive devices, transforming them into tools of empowerment and self-expression.
"As one of the first major projects launched under Layer, it played a pivotal role in shaping our trajectory as a studio."
