A minimalist kitchen by Fisher & Paykel has been fitted into a barn-style home in Arrowtown, New Zealand, as shown in this video produced by Dezeen for the luxury kitchen brand.
Designed by local studio Patterson Associates, The Gatehouse comprises a pair of pitch-roofed volumes made of timber and stone, designed to reflect the region's architectural heritage.
"[The property] was originally a big sheep station," said architect Andrew Patterson, founder of the studio. "We employed a simple, gabled barn shape, which is endemic to the area."
Sonja Hawkins designed the kitchen interior using Fisher & Paykel appliances
A minimalist kitchen forms a focal point of the house, complete with premium appliances integrated into bespoke timber cabinetry by Fisher & Paykel.
The interiors were created by designer Sonja Hawkins, who employed a material palette that took cues from the surrounding landscape, featuring timber-lined walls and terracotta floors.
The kitchen features an induction cooktop with integrated ventilation along the back bench, while a steam oven is housed within the island bench.
A breakfast bar connects the kitchen island to the back benches, while floor-to-ceiling windows look on onto a nearby mountain range and a terrace featuring a Corten-steel sculpture by artist Bernar Venet.
To keep the main space clutter-free, the scullery was concealed behind a sliding timber door. It contains a microwave oven, fridge-freezer and wine cabinet – all Fisher & Paykel appliances that have been integrated into custom cabinetry.
Despite its discreet location, the scullery matches the main kitchen in detail and finish, maintaining the material palette of timber and terracotta.
The house was designed in response to a brief calling for a generously sized living space that could be reconfigured to accommodate both intimate and large gatherings.
The absence of overhead cabinetry helps maintain a sense of openness, while multiple work zones support both everyday use and larger gatherings.
Connected by a central courtyard, the home's two volumes are fully self-sufficient and can function as separate residences.
The smaller building features a portcullis – a vertically retractable door traditionally found at the entrances of castles and large rural estates – aligned with an interior timber staircase to visually connect the interior with the exterior.
Founded in 1934, Fisher & Paykel is a New Zealand luxury appliance brand known for creating kitchen products that seamlessly integrate into the home to complement the surrounding interior.
