Eight interiors where picture windows frame picture-perfect views

This lookbook collates eight bedrooms and living spaces where slim-framed picture windows help landscapes become art.

A picture window is square or rectangular in shape, lacks transoms or crossbeams of any kind, has a slimline frame and comprises one singular – often large – pane of glass.

These qualities allow the views beyond to be displayed in an unobstructed way that could be mistaken for a painting hung on the wall.

The following views captured include rolling hills, dense forests, river valleys, salt marshes, desert mountains and seascapes all over the world.

The Blue House, Portugal, by Atelier Backlar

An expansive seascape is seen through the white-framed picture window at the foot of a bed in this clifftop house in the Azores by Portuguese architecture studio Atelier Backlar.

Rectangular and square windows punctuate the house's distinctive blue cladding, which is perched above a former traditional whaling bay below, with the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Redshank artist's studio, UK, by Lisa Shell

Architect Lisa Shell designed this cork-clad cabin to look out over – and stand directly above – tidal salt marshes in Essex, complete with ever-moving channels of seawater and swaying grass.

This shifting landscape, teeming with seabirds, is captured through a large picture window in the living area.

Whistler Hideaway, Canada, by Bricault Design

The treetops seen through the picture windows of this wood-lined cabin bedroom give the interior a nest-like feel.

Local studio Bricault Design designed the British Columbia residence with various styles of window, all of which look out onto the tree trunks and canopies, depending on height.

Alde Valley Barn, UK, by Mole Architects

British studio Mole Architects brought the sweeping arable land of Suffolk into this living room via a series of white-framed picture windows.

The lines ploughed and planted into the field outside create pattern and texture that match the rug, tabletop and soft furnishings within.

Pajaro Dunes house, USA, by Fuse Architects

The shores of the Pacific Ocean are only a stone's throw away from this seaside house, nestled among the sand dunes of a Californian beach.

A large picture window behind the dining area captures the scene, which also features tall grass and a group of Adirondack chairs.

Amangiri villa, USA, by Masastudio

The colours of the rugged Utah desert terrain beyond the picture window in this bedroom correspond to its brown, beige and khaki colour palette.

As well as providing a dramatically arid view, the rock escarpment that the villa faces also creates an enhanced sense of privacy.

The Nest, Canada, by Daria Sheina Studio

A gallery-like aesthetic was created by the stacking of black-framed picture windows in this double-height cabin living space.

The woodland views are referenced within through novelty gnome- and tree stump-shaped side tables, a rustic wood-framed sofa and green marmoleum flooring.

House Grimstad, Norway, by Waelgaard Salim Arkitekter

The warm, spruce-lined walls of this living area give way to a picture window that frames views of a pleasant garden with fruit trees and grass lawns.

To contrast the interior, local studio Waelgaard Salim Arkitekter clad the exterior of the holiday home with black tar-stained timber planks.
