David Chipperfield Architects celebrates two of its "most important projects" in short film

British studio David Chipperfield Architects celebrates 15 years of the Hepworth Wakefield and Turner Contemporary in this short film, shared exclusively with Dezeen.
Opened within weeks of each other in 2011, the Hepworth Wakefield gallery in West Yorkshire and the Turner Contemporary museum in Margate are considered two of the studio's most important projects, influencing the evolution of its work that followed.
To mark their 15th anniversary, David Chipperfield Architects is publishing this short film exclusively with Dezeen, which documents the impact of the projects through insights from people who work at and frequent the galleries.

"This year marks the 15th anniversary of both Turner Contemporary and Hepworth Wakefield, two of our most important projects," the studio told Dezeen.
"Opening within weeks of each other, they represented something of a homecoming for the practice after years of success outside the UK."
"Fifteen years on, both museums have exceeded expectations," added David Chipperfield Architects.
"The projects share not only similar civic ambitions and timing, but also a formal approach: sculptural, monolithic responses to their settings, with a focus on natural light that would go on to influence our later work."

In the film, glimpses of the landmark projects are interspersed with numerous interviews, including one with Turner Contemporary employee Katie Barber. Barber said that the museum has triggered a creative renaissance in Margate, despite the local community's initial hesitation about the project.
"Turner Contemporary was conceived in the mid 2000s," she reflected. "Margate was going through a pretty low ebb; it started a bit of a creative resurgence."
David Chipperfield Architects was founded by David Chipperfield in 1985. Elsewhere, it recently transformed a historic Spanish bank into Faro Santander museum, and it is designing the red-brick Nobel Center in Sweden.
